ITS BEST IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL (DMV) DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.

If the car has NY Plates, then you had it titled in NY. The NY DMV should be able to print you a replacement title.

If it has NJ Plates, it would have a NJ title.

If the car has NY plates, then you have a NY title. They would have made you change the title to get the plates.

When I moved to Texas from Oklahoma, I didn't have to get my title transferred to the state of Texas. Your title should still be registered in the state your purchased it from. The title shows ownership, and as Tanya wrote, it is not changed until the car is sold to the new owner. Contact the DMV in the town you purchased the car and file for a lost title with your VIN number.

The title is probably with Jersey, even if you do have it registered in New York. Titles usually don't transfer until sold.
