I always pictured Bible Thumpers as people who thump their Bibles on tables to get people's attention.

According to Wikipedia, "The term alludes to a preacher thumping his hand hard down on the lectern and the Bible on it to emphasize a point during a sermon."

I always imagined someone tapping their Bible to more strongly assert that what they are saying is in the Bible. As in "Because our Lord God said so!" *thump * thump * thump * thump * thump*

They are thumping people (that don't believe in god as they do) on the head with the bible. The farther from thier beliefs you are, the harder they thump you.

Well, I don't know that there is one clear answer but in the case of my evangelical christian brother it is the right to live the life you choose rather than the one he thinks you should be living. I think bible thumping is more of an attempt at hijacking ones right to live as they see fit for themselves and using outdated theology as a basis for it.

I thought it meant they'd be talking down to you, thumping their Bibles at the passage where it says whatever you're doing is wrong.

because of the fact whilst they're speaking they're in many cases keeping a bible and are very uh... lively approximately their speeches many of the time. The save on thumping the bible on their palms or sometimes on the element they stand directly to talk.
