from the thickest, the strings are E A D G B e, numbers 6 5 4 3 2 1. #6 is the thickest string. then.. there are the frets. you put a finger on the 6th string, 3rd fret. And theeen.. 5th string, 2nd fret. 2nd and 1st strings.. 3rd fret. You can figure out for yourself the correct finger placements.

go to ultimate-guitars.com..it'll teach you how.just place the arrow on top of the chords..you can also search in youtube.com on basic guitar lessons as well.
don't just dwell on yahoo.answers coz some are just after for the points and might not be so useful in providing you with info. google it but at the same time, post it.that way, you're hitting two birds with one stone.use your resourcefulness.
good luck!=)

If you want a 'g' chord,
put your index finger on the
3rd fret, first string.
your next finger on the 2nd fret, 5th string
your next finger on the 3rd fret, 6th string.

the (3s) are the 3rd fret where you put your left index finger
the (4) is where you out your left middle finger on
the (5s) is where you put your left ring and pinky finger on
Here is a another simple basic G chord tab
___3__________________________________E low
