I need help with my World Religion homework. I need to know how a different church service would go. If you are anything BUT presbyterian(that's what I am, they must be different religions) please tell me how a typical services goes. What rituals, what text is read, is their discussion or just reading, are their any songs, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am a Missionary Baptist, and we never know how our services will go. So I will give you the two ways that happen most the time. The second one will be kind of many ways I have seen it go.

1. Normal Service- The church choir sings about 4 songs, then we have prayer and then special singing. The pastor gets up and begins to preach what God has laid upon his heart to preach. We close in prayer, or altar call and then dismiss after that is over.

2. When God shows up in a service- The choir will begin to sing, and sometimes people start coming to the altar, either for salvation, or to get there heart right. I have seen them come up during the special singing as well. Some times before our pastor starts to preach I have seen people just begin to give thanks to God for what He has done in their life, and seen people go to shouting and running the isle, because they love the Lord. Then at the end I have seen people get saved, because of people making much of Jesus, and God. This kind of services happens alot.

Pentecostal Christian...

Church begins at 9:00 am. Before service the women gather in one group and the men in the other. They stand in a circle at the alter and pray for a while. Not all members do this, only the ones who want to.
Church is opened with praise and worship time. We have a song leader, three back up singers, a piano player and a drummer. We sing one song and then the past or or worship leader opens in prayer. The words to the songs are displayed on projection screens. The congregation usually stands during songs and/or raise their hands in worship.

9:45-10:00: Our sermon time begins. The pastor preaches on what he feels God has laid on his heart from the New King James Version of the Holy Bible. Occassionally he will read from the NIV version. His sermons usually come from the New Testament. Most recently he has been preaching on the book of Revelation. Most of the congregation follow along in their Bibles and/or take notes during the sermon.

Service ends at 11 with prayer and usually an alter call for anyone who needs prayer. After service there are Sunday school classes and also a second, shorter service.

I have personal experiance with only two types. christianity and wicca. most christians start out with singing and church announcements. then go to the sermon. often the preacher will read from a selected text and speak on it. most sermons last from a half hour to an hour. the services often end with some more music and the concluding prayer. music type and preaching style varies greatly according to the denomination of the christians church. wicca- much easier. there are no schedulec services. we practice alone or in groups known as covens, or both. we are very ritualistic and nature based. ceremonies include worship to the goddess in the god, raising energy, bringing positive energies, healing and such. I wish I could tell you more about group meetings, but I am a solitary practitioner. the closest I have to a 'church service' is taking a long walk or jog out doors. I get more involved in herbal healing and stone/crystal rituals. hope it helps.

I am Apostolic Pentacostal, We have singing, We do foot washing & take the Lord's supper or communion, & we preach from the bible, There is the gifts of the spirit in operation in our church, with tongues & interpretations, & prophecies,, sometimes there is spiritual dancing in the Holy Ghost, & sometimes running around the church. But it all depends on what & how God moves in each service. We do not have rituals we go through, In other words we don't pass out a leaflet to tell everyone what we will do today, We let God lead.

Baptist services are like others, even Presbyterian, but without the responsive readings, the congregational prayers. Same basic order of service.
Certain churches were so close to God, you could feel Him there. No, it wasn't just in my head, if you were wondering. Those are the ones you can't get enough of, and the service never lasts long enough.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons if you like)

First, members and guests are welcomed by a member of the bishopric,(one of the three men who oversee the congregation.) Each week, one of these men conducts the meeting. Announcements are made. Then the congregation sings a hymn and the opening prayer is given by a member of the church. (Any adult member in good standing can be asked to say this prayer.) The prayer is not recited-it is given as the member feels inspired, using a pattern. Church business is then conducted.

Following this, the sacrament is administered to the members of the church. Before church, boys ages fourteen and fifteen prepare the sacrament table. A hymn is sung by the congregation to focus attention on the purpose of the sacrament. Then the bread is blessed. Then young boys twelve or older take the bread to the members. The boys are called deacons. A deacon takes his tray of bread to his assigned aisle. He holds the tray while the member at the end of the row takes a piece of bread with his right hand and eats it. Then that member takes the tray with his right hand and holds it for the next person. When the tray reaches the end of the aisle, another deacon is waiting to take it. If you are not a member, you may simply take the tray and hold it for the person next to you, without taking any of the bread. While members wait for their turn, they think of the Savior. When the bread has been passed, the water is blessed and the same procedure is used to pass the sacramental water to the members.

Following the passing of the sacrament, two members often give short “talks.” Talks are what we call speeches. These talks are generally five minutes long and are on a topic assigned by a member of the bishopric. These are followed by two longer talks given by members of the church. The adults’ talks are usually about fifteen minutes long. Any member in good standing can be asked to give these talks, and they are also usually on a topic assigned by church leadership. Sometimes there is a hymn in the middle of the talks, or there is a vocal or instrumental musical presentation. After the talks, there is a closing hymn and a prayer. Again, the prayer is given by any member asked to do so.

I belong to a non-denominational church. We sing one song and
then there is a solo and then our Pastor-Teacher preaches from
the Word for one hour and then we are dismissed. Our emphasis is on the Word. Heaven and earth will pass away
but my Word will not pass away.

when I was younger I went to Sunday school for an hour where we talked about God and read from the bible. Then I when for an hour or so where the candle boy/girls "In robe" lite candles on the alter, then the preacher read from the bible and gave his understanding on what he read.Full blown ritual of passing the "Money plate". Every one joined in on song via helm book. When it was time to go the preacher would stand in the front door to shake every ones hand and pat them on the back and say "God bless you and thanks for the money."
