When my front wipers clean the windshield it does not go all the way to the edge of the glass leaving a 6" dirty area on the side of the windshield. Is the travel adjustable?

there is no way to increase the travel. the motor spins 360 degrees, the pivot arms are what makes them change direction. the only thing that could be wron is if someone installed the wiper arms on wrong, they would be too low on the glass when they are parked.

Interesting question.
I give you a link to "How Stuff Works". This a basic on how windshield wipers work. As you will see.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/wiper1.htm
You "may" modify it to work. But, I not sure it worth the hassle. See the flat blade arm comes off where the gears are? Changing the length of this and "may" have to do a little with the rods you see from the motor to the wiper blade part, you "may" get some extra travel. Then you move the blade arm to adjust for the increased travel so it not try wiping down inside the hood area or going completely off the windshield. Now the hard part is knowing how much longer the flat metal at the gears and/or arms from the motor to the wiper blades need to be and that nothing under where they are interferes (It have room to work).
I think just changing the length of the flat metal at the gears would work.
But, it may be a lot of trouble. As the saying goes; "If it work, don't fix it"! ;-)

You can't without modifications. And it probably wouldn't be worth it.
