Jesus was saying that in a world that is full of hate, a message of love will cause dissention, even between people in close relationships, such as parents and children.
Jesus wasn't blind to the world's resistance to His message. But He also knew it would triumph in the end.

Lk 12:53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Jesus is teaching here about the Freeing Power of the Spirit of Wisdom and Love.
The 'father and mother' represent the inculcation by tradition that has been the foundation of 'religious' schools of thought for thousands of years.
Jesus is a Pioneer for the Freedom of the Hu-man Spirit and the process he is descibing is first an interior mental process whereby one sees through the illogical teachings of the past and is no longer bound by them, then the emanicipation from the organisations that continue to support them.
He is not describing violence, but the liberation of the youth from the ideas that enslaved their parents.
"Let the dead bury their own dead, YOU, follow Me". - Jesus.

Matthew 10:34-36 has Jesus paraphrasing Micah 7:6:
34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn
" 'a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her motherinlaw—
36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.
Both refer to times when persecution and trouble will be so great that people will even betray their own families to try to escape from it.
