Most Muslims do not know their Quran. There are early Meccan verses which are fairly peaceful and then there are the later Medinan verses which are far from peaceful, for example:
sura 2:191 Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them;
sura 2:193 Fight the infidels until they accept Islam;
sura 3:28 Muslims must not take the infidels as friends;
sura 3:85 Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable;
sura 5:82 The most implacable of men in their enmity to the faithful are the Jews
sura 9:123 Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood;
sura 5:33 Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticise Islam;
sura 8:12 Terrorise and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an;
sura 9:29 Kill the Jews and the Christians if they do not convert to Islam or refuse to pay Jizya tax;
sura 47:4 Do not hanker for peace with the infidels; behead them when you catch them

No!
Which part of Sharia Law can be called peaceful? the stonings? the beheadings?
The 911 thugs were not impoverished, they came from well educated Muslim families.
And this worshiping of suicide bombers? Peaceful?
What are you smoking?
The behavior of those commiting these brutal acts is at odds with any claim to Islam being peaceful.
You can look at incidents in History books like Saladin and the mercy he showed the crusaders and imply a peaceful interpretation of Islam. But Islam has never had a Reformation. It is still a medieval way of thought that violently obeys an invisible all seeing and all knowing monster.

I think there is a danger of committing the No True Scotsman fallacy here.
Argument: "No Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."
Reply: "But my uncle Angus, who is a Scotsman, likes sugar with his porridge."
Rebuttal: "Aye, but no true Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."
Argument: "No Muslim is terribly violent."
Reply: "But what about the 9/11 bombers?"
Rebuttal: "They were motivated by politics, not Islam. No person who is motivated by Islam, would be terribly violent."
This is fallacious because the 9/11 bombers were so blatantly Islamic. You can't just disown them, the minute it doesn't suit your argument.
Personally if I were going to argue Islam was the religion of peace, I would say "they are Islamic, and America screws up the rest of the world, 10% of the world owns 85% of the worlds wealth, so it was right to attack them."

I know peaceful Muslims and I respect the Sufi tradition in its entirity. However, as long as Saudi Arabia is whipping and imprisoning its rape victims, critics of Islam are ending up dead, Iran's president is telling an pocalyptic tale of the battle of Armaggedon between Islam and the Great Satan - I could go on and on - I have to say that I do not view Islam as peaceful overall, but actually rather violent. I'm thankful that there are people like you within it and I hope that your perspective on Islam will spread, especially in the Arabic Muslim world.

not really, it is actually a religion devised by satan himself.
Like other religions it is one based around works. In other words by doing "good deeds" such as killing an infidel (i.e. a christian) you will go to some sort of heaven. The only religion that is not works based is Christianity which is built solidly around faith.
If you don't believe me than I would really encourage you to look into what the real God is like, and what he did for you and I.
I hope this helps.

I am going to have to give a resounding "NO!" to that. They need to clean up their fanatics like the Christians eventually did, and they also to have a lot of work to go on Women's rights. Hard to be a religion of peace when one gender is completely an afterthought and subservient.

Wish I knew more about it. There are so many conflicting reports and stories-most of them take the side of one extreme or the other, and the more moderate descriptions don't seems very in depth or convincing. We could all use a good source for honest and objective explanations written for those of us who are new to the subject.

After taking a World Religions course, I would actually agree with you. Of course all religions have their extremists and fundamentalists, but generally, I respect Muslims and everyone other religion, I choose to not subscribe to any.
@Wiccan Rider: Of course there are the extremists and fundamentalists. Look at Westboro Baptist Church, I wouldn't say they are very peaceful are they?
