If you are really interested in becoming a chef, you should go to culinary school.

There is a good listing of schools here - http://www.culinaryschools.com/

But to answer your question - it depends on the restaurant. In some restaurants you will be responsible for the grill or the vegetables, or the appetizers, etc. (think Hell's Kitchen) In other restaurants, yes, you could be making everything on the menu yourself.

As others have said, you usually have help. Many restaurants prep before hand in the morning hours. Soups are made, meats and cheeses are sliced and portioned, salads are made, dressings are made, fish is cleaned and portioned, bacon is precooked etc etc. Then as orders come in you just take what you need and cook it to order. You need to be on your toes and not talking to your co-workers when it gets busy. You should start off in an easier position, don't expect to be head cook anytime soon without some experience.

I used to work in a restaurant- a small delicatessen. And I also handled a lot of the kitchen stuff because it seemed few others could.

What I would do is take care of the 'big stuff' as early as I could in the day (ie. ham, turkey, cakes). And then I would work on the front line with the sandwiches and omelettes. If we started to run out of something in the middle of the day such as the carrot cake, I would head back to the kitchen again.

well, go to the Institute of Culinary arts in pittsburgh, PA for school. they are one of the best!

Now, usually in a restaurant, there are short order cooks, prep cooks, etc, in addition to the main chef. It depends on the type of restaurant you want to work for. Being a head chef, you usually are in charge of the main course, but the side dishes and trimmings are taken care of for you.

In restaurants, there is a different chef for each area i.e. There's a one who does the sea food, one for the grill work, others for desserts, entrees, and mains, soups & sauces etc. Food is prepared before service (mis en plas - means everything in place) in order to speed up the whole process.
Then cooked to order.
You need to be always on your toes and mentally alert, it is a stressful job!

well the chef is in charge of the shift, he or she usually has a few cooks to help him out, so you are not cooking alone..... you cook whatever dishes are ordered....
