shortening is a semi solid fat. the most popular brand here is Crisco.
Ive been told that lard (renderd pork fat) tallow (renderd beef fat)butter and margarine are technically considered types of shortening.beacuse of their semi solid state.
But as a cook I generally regaurd shortening to be vegatable oil based .Crisco is the best .one can use margarine as a replacement but I make sure it is made from veg.oil and not a mixture of both.butter is a good substitute esp.in baking.
unless a recipe specifically calls for lard or tallow ,stick with a vegetable oil based shortening or margarine/butter.

1/2 cup of hydrogenated solid shortening like Crisco or other brands. You can substitute with lard or butter or margerine. A lot depends on what you are cooking. You might be able to use a healthier oil in liquid form- but not if you are baking cookies.

Most likely its calling for a half cup of shortening, like crisco.
There is butter flavored and regular crisco. Comes in a container similiar to coffee.

Usually, they mean Crisco or another similar product. However, in most cases you can substitute butter or lard. If you opt for lard be careful, most of the stuff you can purchase in the supermarket, also has transfats. Look for the word, "hydrogenated." If you use lard it is best to buy it from a butcher and render it yourself. In most cases, though, you could use unsalted butter.
I believe, though, that Crisco is now making a transfat free product. Check the label.

as you change the bowl in one hand, bypass from the middle and fold that area over till each and every thing is blended. in case you do no longer fold it, the egg whites will deflate or something like that
