Hi I don't know much about this but know it can be a issue with kids

feel three is a little Young to give this as a cause and is just a toddler but you are the one to deal day in day out

I have a three year old he OK naughty but I wouldn't say he a problem and would never think of given pills to him still baby's

so I hope you manage to get sorted and I agree doctors are to quick to give a diagnoses when really Your child is way to young to say this and should not try pusshing meds on to you

I fully agree with ,VATO.

seek 2nd opinion

but good luck with what ever the outcome

HE is to Young to be treated for ADHD!!! Listen my older son was off the wall we thought he might be adhd same age as yours but after doing research he was allergic to the red 40 a dye and the other dyes in most foods...we simply changed his diet and he is not allowed to eat or drink anything with any dyes...With in a few weeks you will begin to notice big changes in your child's behavior and sleep patterns....The first few days is tough because the child is adjusting to the new diet food shopping takes a few xtra minutes longer because you have to read the labels....MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU SEND YOUR CHILD TO A DAYCARE THAT THEY KNOW THAT THE CHILD IS ON A DIET AND CAN ONLY EAT CERTAIN FOODS!!!! You might be better off packing your child's lunch and snacks.....I posted a link so you can read more about this and what other parents have to say and what they have done....This Red 40 is no joke its actually outlawed in Canada and other countries around the world!! You will be very surprised to see how much of the food we eat is contaminated with this dangerous chemical...Better off buying organic foods....Good Luck!!

I'm one of those that do not believe in putting kids under the influence of any type of medications. I would suggest you treat you child as a normal 3yr old. When you are going somewhere where you know you might be stuck for a while and he can get bored (like any normal 3 yr old), make sure you have toys for him to play with. And he's old enough to start learning, so try to come up with interactive stuff you can do with him. This way you entertain him as well as he learns something new.

You can even buy flash cards to keep in your pruse and use them to keep him entertained in a pinch. Just remember, he is a precious gift and you need to treasure him for as long as you can. Before you know it he will be grown and doing his own thing.

I agree with your across the board reluctance top begin any medications, because I think they are generally overprescribed. On the other hand, I think that if a medication solves a problem without creating other problems, then it IS good.

There is definitely no one-size-fits-all when it comes to ADHD, what with degree and co-morbidity as well as the drug culture.

Try to read up on scientific findings. Consider, but beware of, the extremes. I think it is generally accepted that behavioral therapy and well-thought out responsive parental strategy are necessary components for success.

Best of luck, you have quite your hands full. Don't go it alone!

3 is awfully young to be certain of ADHD.

I'd see another doctor, and an educational psychologist. In the meantime I assume you're doing the usual stuff about cutting out additives, sugar etc. plus firm discipline, keeping instructions short and simple ... I'd also mug up on-line about wheat intolerances (note: this is different to an allergy!) and perhaps talk to a nutritionist.

I think you're right to want to avoid medication like the plague - keep it as a last resort.

A thought though: he's only 3, so don't you just pick him up and hold him same as any other child still at the "animal" stage?

What do you do when a doctor wants to put a three year old on ADHD meds.....find another doctor that's what you do.

A concrete ADHD diagnosis can't be made by a family doctor or pediatrician, and sure as hell cannot be made at three!

Try diet modification and firm parenting. He's three for pete sake -- they don't have enought attention span to have a deficit of yet!

one thing that so many people don't realize is ADHD is caused by food additives and certain foods. They are MSG, milk, and trans fats. If you get your kid off of foods that contain them you will see a big difference in his behavior. If you want to research this, start out by going to MSG.org and the information will blow your mind. Try the simple approach first. All prescription meds are toxic to the body.

I'm going to tell you the truth and it's mainly just my opinion. All three year olds have ADHD but it's not really a problem. It's called being a toddler. Doctors will diagnose anyone with anything. My doctor tries to figure out all of my son's problems when really--they aren't problems they are just normal toddler behavior issues. If I were you I'd check into changing his diet, creating a routine, and having him involved in more activities before even considering he could even have ADHD.

I have a daughter , who is adhd.I can really relate. I was told that this was a really young age to put her on them.I did`nt, It was HARD, but it is still too young. It took a LOTof Patience, understanding. You have to throw the normal child rearing books out the window. Your # 1 prority is keeping them safe.. Keep him very active.I really feel for you, Love him . I only give my daughter medicine for school. She realizes it`s only used to help her concentrate. She says it takes some of her "happiness" away, so she does`nt want it anyother time.I call her my energizer bunny-she keeps going & going lol.One big thing is DO NOT punish if he can`t help it.My daughter is 9, now her teachers are impressed with her positive attitude toward life. These kids are much more sensitive than others, it`s also harder for them to make friends. but now , she had gotten friends, she has a lot of compassion toward other, In her earlier years, she`s was found to be immature, developmentally delayed etc. NOW,She`s is "gifted" in alot of areas-reading, math beyound her years.. It`s a lot of hard work, but now I see the positive things, that go with this. GOOD LUCK Mom, you need it.Wait on the medicine, I did`nt start till she was 6. I wanted her, to develope her own personality-thats also why I don`t give it to her , weekends, vacations etc. e-mail me if you need any of "my" advice.I went a lot on instinct & my friends, really thought I was spoiling her rotten, but I`ve gotten great results. Patty is right-red-dye is a BIG, no, no.I `ve about had to peel my daughter off the ceiling after drinking cherry kool-aid.

Don't be afraid of medication if that's what your child needs. ADHD is caused by a lack of a certain chemical in the brain. Medications have helped so many people.
