My parents didn't teach me dogma, and allowed me to find my way; one thing that was taught to me and I still think is true, is that we can choose the course God has in mind for each of us individually or we can choose something else. Our lives become self evident which way we've gone. I also think it's true that God has a purpose - unique to every individual - and offers this to us -- but we have to choose to follow that purpose for our own lives.
So, charting one's own course is possible; but this is relatively true depending.
How many? As many as there are people for even those unthinkingly following some "dogmatic" thing from birth is a choice too. They do it without thinking, but it's still a choice, no one forces this, especially not God.
A person's path through life is always about every thinking moment, and unthinking moment of the human mind. But if we are really following the best most perfect tailored course that suits us each as individuals then we are most certainly choosing the one God suggested and would love for us to follow.
It's the way it goes, I think.

"CHARTING" ones "course" has to do with Astrology. I do not practice any perverted form of such. However, my path was part of the plan of Yahweh, and is written in the stars, as some might say, just in a different way than many might think.
As far as my parents, they are part of mainstream religion. I am not. They do not look kindly on my understanding, nor the path I have been directed to by Yahweh, I did not 'choose' this path, it only looks as though I did. "Choice is an elusion", our very steps, thoughts, words, heart felt intentions and 'course', are predestinated. Any other view is idolatry, a worship of self. Evil. Proverbs 16:1

I follow my parents lessons - with updates as they happen. I probably am out of sync with the world - as I do not like humanities course.
Life is simple - and if lived as your grandparents or great grandparents explained - no lying, cheating. Don't sleep around, pay the bills, save for rainy days. Etc. - Be involved in your community, stay in touch with your family.
I have NO interest in being a player - or hip - or media driven.
My parents supplied the framework - I live with my choices.

My parents pretty much left it up to me when I was younger and I tried to chart my own course. But then I answered the Lord's call to come into his family and now I know better.
Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

HA! If I'd charted my own course, I wouldn't have ended up here!
But no, I'm not following what my parents taught any more, though I gave it a real shot 'cause I trusted them.

Hi Theo,
My parents to this day think that a kid will turn out good because 'hopefully they'll out grow it'. Can you believe it?
My parents were not wise, but praise be to God He saved me and now my life is in subjection to Him

I had to overcome what I was charted as a child. After that I made my own chart.

Theo,
My wife and I have charted our course over the last twenty years. We use the LORD'S Roadmap as a guide. We have been married for 32 years and have been Christians for over twenty. We have three wonderful children and a grandson who we are CRAZY ABOUT! Have a wonderful week and a glorious Holiday Season.
Thanks,
Eds

Well, we all have to start somewhere, right?
my parent's DID teach me to question everything, and not to take anything on "faith."
they seem kind of upset that i'm an atheist, but are glad that i'm not part of any "cult"
