Found out recently that a U.S.A. waiter or waitresses only make half of minimum wage and that is why tips are so important to them. In general the going rate for a tip in the U.S.A is 15-20% which is the same as in Canada yet our service people get paid minimum wage. Do you think American culture has affected Canada through movies and tv that has makes us tip equal amount except for the fact that our service people are paid a better wage. Knowing this will you continue to tip in Canada the 15-20?

I've never considered American culture when tipping.

Tip for good service between 15-20% has been the norm in Canada for many years.

I tip 15% when in Canada and the US. In some places, such as in some Euorpean countries, tips are not expected unless the service was excellent and it is an added bonus.
I really hate it sometimes in Canada and the US when the server doesn't think you've tipped enough and comes back to complain. This has never happened to me personally, but I have witnessed it. I remember seeing a couple being almost chased out of a cafe/lounge in downtown Montreal once after only having a coffee and cake or something and being castigated about leaving such a meagre tip. I wonder if they actually think this motivates people to leave more or change their mind and hand over more cash to someone who is verbally abusing them in public??
Sometimes wait staff are also not even couretous. I have experienced this the world over, but I remember once I was at a reasonably good restaurant in Toronto eating with my parents. My mom requested mustard or something and the server said "Is that the last request? I can't be coming and going from this table all night!" I was really shocked! This was her job afterall - to serve the people dining AND be courteous about it. It seemed she thought a tip was a given and not something she had to earn.
My mom, probably afraid she'd poison us or something, just smiled and said "no, thanks". I can only imagine how this server must react to bossy or unfriendly patrons. My parents and I were charming.

I think people tip for the service and not for some kind of charity towards the waiters. So I do not care if the Candian waiters are already paid their minimum wage, if the service is good they deserve their 15-20 just as well as any good American waiter.
