Child mutilation (circumcision - male and female), beating, forced marriage, gender discrimination, slavery, denial of education. Shouldn't everyone stand up against these? Is this not the 21st century when the world is fast becoming one large, open community?

I am not directing criticism at any culture or religion in particular. But even today all these things go on and are 'justified' for religious or cultural reasons; whether it is female circumcision in some African countries, the subjugation of women and girls to virtual slavery in some Islamic cultures or the beating of women and children around the world... and numerous other practices.

People that justify male circumcision are dead wrong. Just like people who justified slavery as being "good for the well-being of the slaves."
Everyone should be against these things, but culture and ignorance are very powerful things.

Does anyone know enough about EVERY religion and every culture to give an intelligent answer to the first question? You need a little more education about circumcision, especially female circumcision. Since she has no foreskin, what do You suppose is being cut off? (And WHY?)
With Your final question You open up a whole new can of worms. Yes, this is the 21st century, according to MY calender. And we are moving toward a global community, but this has its dangers. I don't say it's a bad thing, only that it is not ALL good. Cultures clash because people don't do their homework. Wars result. And i hope You had Your flu shot this year. . . .

Name me the religion that says that those acts are acceptable and I shall denounce it. I truly believe that such "cultures" are simply backward thinking and primitive.
paperback_writer; So Judaism says that "Child mutilation (circumcision - male and female), beating, forced marriage, gender discrimination, slavery, denial of education" are acceptable? If so then yes. I do not agree with circumcision of any kind, you may view it as acceptable however I see it as unnecessary. Male circumcision is seen as some as no better than female circumcision. It may not be mutilation however that is a matter of opinion. I am aware that Jesus was circumcised however see not why that is in any way relevant to me. I am not Christian. I was saying that any religion that says all those things are right is wrong.

I watched a documentary on the horrors of the Irish Catholic orphanages today and what those Nuns did to those poor children goes to show that most religions are still out of touch with reality of life. It was real sad and to say that it was during the 20th century and lasted for more that 60 years and in some places up to 70 years. So ask those children what it was like at the coal face as we write this answer.

Islam makes male circumcision compulsory while there are some African cultures which practice female circumcision. The rest..Slavery, etc! Nowadays? No I don't think there's any culture or religion today which condones it.
Male circumcision has many benefits. Look it up. Recommended by WHO.

With the exception of male circumcision, which is quite necessary in many young men to day, if you think not, you really should read up, many jobs, ie: truck drives, machine operators, or any-other that requires long hours in a sitting position, anyway with that one exception, I don't know of a true religion that DOES support these issues. Yes there may be cults, out there that do, but not any religion that worships the one true, God of Heaven and earth.

Male circumcision is NOT mutilation. It has been scientifically proven that women with Jewish partners do not develop cervical cancer. No doubt this was understood way back, also.
Female circumcision is an entirely different matter and is performed for very different reasons. Perhaps before you start bashing the practises of other faiths, you should educate yourself and have an informed opinion. I agree that female circumcision is a terrible thing. However, speak to any Jewish man you like and you will find that male circumcision does not affect their enjoyment of sex in the least.
ABBY - you want to 'denounce' Judaism as backward and primitive? Where do you think the ten commandments came from? Jesus would have been circumcised, remember.

reigion and certain culture aspects are just accepted forms of mental disorders. If religion didn't exist these days, the world would be a better place.
Blame the pope, jesus, muhamed or any of the other 'good' people, but the fact is, they sparked the beginning of a mental disorder that has swept throughout the world and because so many people 'believe', your's, mine and any other aethiest or secular view will not be recognised.

Yes, I do discriminate.
It is important to make informed decisions.
Also, because education is not an entitlement, there is no such thing as "denial of education".
Oh, yes. Male circumcision is good idea for medical reasons.

No, but the Bible can. All these things were predicted to happen. Shows that the end is near. I don't remember the verse, I'll have to look it up, but it says that 'if God didn't cut those days short, there would be no living flesh on earth'. Jesus gave a clear account of things in Matthew 24 too.
