Its from one of his books THE MYSTIQUE OF THE ISLAMIC ORIENT

'May any muslim who happens to read these lines forgive my plain speaking. To them the koran is the word of allah and i respect their faith. I dont share this idea and i do not wish to get carried away by such myths the way some orientalists have done in order to be in good terms with muslims or islamic governments.

while muslims have every right to read and believe every single word as logic in the koran , they must extend that privilage to any free thinker who is willing to stand up and question the absurd claims this so called holy book makes in the name of an arabian deity'

How will you answer dear old Maxime Rodinson?

The proposition seem perfectly reasonable to me. But alas we all know what the reaction is likely to be.

There does seem to be a sad lack of reason and logic when even seeking a debate with any fundimentalist group. On both sides of the divide.

The problem in our age though, is that one side is sanctioned by the 'kill em all' faction.

She does not need an answer, unless you do not believe in Free Speech. Muslims are free to consider the Koran to be the actual words of God.

I don't. But I'm not a Muslim.

you cannot have faith and truth; they don't work together.

certainty is the enemy of investigation. the only way to guarantee that you never learn anything is to be sure that you know it all already.

i am sure ms. rodinson meant well. but i don't think that she has grasped how absolute this problem is.
