In Islam it is forbidden to harm the "people of the book" i.e. the people of the other Abrahamic faiths. Islam itself would not exist had not the Christian King of Ethiopia protected Mohammed's p.b.u.h. followers when they were driven from Arabia..... So where all of this fighting and "jihad against the infidel" stuff. And from the other side....why is Islam always perceived as an enemy and not the people who manipulate it?

Islam was spread by the sword and watered by the blood of the many Jews and Christians they murdered.
Islam may claim to be the offspring of Christianity and Judaism; but I don't believe the opinion is shared by well informed Jews or Christians.

That's until those people of the book cross the line. When you kill, or indirectly support the killing of Muslims all across the world, we're not gonna turn the other cheek. Allah makes a distinction in the Quran among people of the book...those who do not fight us or are unjust to us we are ordered to coexist with peacefully and any enmity or aggression towards them is punishable by us. On the other hand, those who think it's their God given right to go to any country and start a war where millions of people end up getting killed, displaced, etc. those are open to any kind of aggression period, as they must be eliminated for the greater good of humanity.

People turned to Islam with out compulsion, with free will - none was forced to even though Muslims were dominating the region.
There were Jewish & Christian men visiting Prophet Mohammad to resolve their religious matters - but it will be too much for you to accept it as a truth!
Even in those times, Jews never heeded to correct their concept of ending up in Paradise, no matter what as being the Chosen Ones of God; and Christians never corrected their Trinity concept – even then in those days they were having good relations, no matter, they fought a few battles earlier but later they all were at peace.
Koran speaks high, I repeat, high of Jews & Christians but at the same time, Koran is also critical of certain beliefs practiced by both of them - it is only a matter of Principal and It Should Not is the basis for hatred. As you see, they were at peace with all the differences then Why Cannot We Now.
I must remind to all those who do not know that Koran was not descended in one-go, it was in fact revealed verse-by-verse in a few years.
Koran even predicted about Greeks victory over their enemy, and Greeks took over in a few years.
Who were the Greeks, by the way?
They were Christians believing in Trinity, but still God wanted them to be victors in the land, so were they! These are the Ways of God and a man is not wise enough to reach to the wisdom of God All-wise.

The media in the US is Christian based, it makes the Christians feel better that they can call Islam a silly religion and take attention away from themselves.
The jihad stuff comes from the Shia Muslims who are only 20% and took over the peace loving Sunni Muslims (80%)
Jihad is supposed to a challenge to yourself. Such as a jihad for being a better student in school.

You should get extra points for this question. But World Religions need to Evolve. Remember each religion is sorely persecuted when it first appears as a new idea and then goes through a period of gaining acceptance and supporters. Religion is the precursor to Science in most primitive worlds . They both work hand in hand trying to help Mankind explain this world and reality and also to help make our lives better. But remember like a 3 ring circus , though they overlap and work together they are all each in their own arena.

Good point to differentiate between Islam and the people manipulating it.
As a Muslim, I admit that there are some war verses in Quran that can be manipulated by extremists and Islam bashers to fuel hate and rage against Islam and Muslims for their benefits.

the point you brought up about the Abyssinian king is very correct.
It's a whack perspective that extremists have. unfortunately it's slowly defiling our religion because good people refuse to amass and speak out against it.
With every generation/era there is always something thats percieved as the common enemy. Before Islam it was the Communists. it's not right but its certainly natural.

well jihad is not against christians or jews or any specific people,
first u need to know what jihad is,
the prophet mohammad says "What is the best type of Jihad [struggle]?" He answered: "Speaking truth before a tyrannical ruler."
and one day after they got home from a battle, he said " we came from the small jihad to the big one, they asked him what is it, he said "jihad of our own selves", its to do right and to keep ur self from what god forbids;
whene someone comes to ur house and try to steal , rape, kill u n ur familly, u have the right to kill him, thats what is real jihad,
and about the jihad now days, like the wtc, and uk, and spain ... its comes from some people who missunderstand the religion
and see each time something happened thay say islam, but if the murderer is not muslim they wouldnt talk about his religion

Good question. Just one thing the people of the book are the Jews, christans etc who were given books before us. We are not people of the book, we are the final nation of the final Prophet.

There are many paragraphs in the Quran which are extremely contrary to claims that Islam is not anti-woman, not anti-non-religious and NOT anti-violent. Islam is the religion based on the book.
