About a year ago I got charged of a felony for fraud and got probation for three years.I am not proud of what I did. I not a bad bad person, I just did a stupid thing a got caught. Once I complete probation and pay restitution, it will become a misdemeanor. A policeman and I went out on a date about eight years ago and recently contacted one another by email. We are both married so I don't seek anything but friendship. He's been with his department for 17 years and is now a detective. I also work for a government agency which he wasn't aware of. I just never found any reason to contact him sooner until two months ago when a friend of mine was talking about this past and she reminded me of our date. I am sure he has a background check on me. I think I am a conflict of interest criminal. I wished I could explain to him why and whay had happened, but I am sure it wouldn't matter now. Thanks for all answers and please be kind.

Sorry I do not want a relationship, only friendship. But judging by some of these answers it would seem to be something to leave alone.

NO.

Good law enforcement officers are NOT the kind of people you want to have as your friends. There is no such thing as a true friend who is also a law-enforcement officer.

If they ever find themselves in a position to 'protect' you from prosecution for anything, you will wind up owing them a much greater 'favor' later on.

Either the guy is a good cop and takes favors from and makes favors from nobody and will turn you in on a dime, or the guy is a slimeball who will make an effort to use you.

There is no middle ground.

You would especially make a good contact for a bad cop to have in his pocket, because you work for some other branch of the governement.. AND you have a felony record.

He would wind up using you over and over and over again, and he would make you feel that he was doing you the favor all that time.

You are most definitely a conflict of interest.

That said, if you're dead set on having him in your pocket, good luck.

I am not in LE and realize that this may sound a bit like a Holiday Inn commercial, but I did recently complete a Citizen's Police Academy course. lol

One thing I learned is that the vast majority of policemen realize that nice, otherwise good people, sometimes do bad things.

I used to date a cop and he certainly had a sympathetic soul.

In short, I wouldn't worry about it. We have all gone through rough times in our lives. If this was the only instance of your crossing the line, you have not done badly at all. Many people do just that daily yet, luck out because their particular indiscretions aren't illegal.

As my poppa used to say, you are no better and no worse than anyone else.

I am a cop, and a good friend of mine has been in and out of jail for meth use. I stand by him when he is out and write to him etc. when he is in. all I have to do is not tell him if a bust is coming (which I wouldn't know anyway) or help him hide evidence etc. my department doesn't expect me to give up life long friendships with someone who has a problem. I am trying to help him.

Id say try,but dont hold out any big hopes of being accepted by his buds..thats a clannish bunch...but a lot of cops have a slightly tarnished squeeze on the side so why not?
