consciousness, in psychology, a term commonly used to indicate a state of awareness of self and environment. In Freudian psychology, conscious behavior largely includes cognitive processes of the ego, such as thinking, perception, and planning, as well as some aspects of the superego, such as moral conscience. Some psychologists deny the distinction between conscious and unconscious behavior; others use the term consciousness to indicate all the activities of an individual that constitute the personality. In recent years, neuropsychologists have begun to investigate the links between consciousness and memory, as well as altered states of consciousness such as the dream state.-

A deep, abiding, well of pure, spacious knowing, of being connected to the pure realm of all wisdom and peace........it is a channel of purest light pouring through you invisibly that can be known intimately and at your deepest core self as the energy pours in through the top of your head (crown chakra), and in doing so, connects you to the life force and all that is. The more that you wish to be a fully conscious being, and the more that you choose consciousness, and act with consciousness constantly, it will grow in you. It is your birth-right to experience full consciousness and live accordingly. It is not just for some, and there is no one way to attain it.......it is for everyone. It feels like all peace....all love...oneness.....in heightened, and most powerfully natural, awareness. It feels like purest contentment.

From what I can tell, brains model reality around them in order to interact with it. When the model becomes complex enough to include the 'self' in this model, that is when one becomes self-aware, or conscious.
