Adobe Photoshop an easy yet powerful tool. Open the Image.
Go to Image---->Adjustment----->Desaturate. Thats it or just press Shift+Ctrl+U.

Try using the free Google program Picasa 2. It will convert a color image to black and white with ease. Picasa 2 is freeware and very easy to use.

IrfanView: Image -> Decrese Color Depth -> check "2 color black/white 1BPP"
for better results, Convert to Graysclae (Ctrl+G) before doing that.

Many options are available. With Adobe Photoshop software you can do miracles with your pictures.

Other simplest way is just convert the picture property or mode to Gray Scale. The picture will automatically turn to B&W.

Go to www.irfanview.com and download the irfanview program, it's free. When you start irfanview, go to file > open your picture > go to image > convert to greyscale.
