There is no single real reason, but a number of reasons why we attacked Iraq. The most important reason was to have a base in the Middle East in case we needed to attack Iran. Iran has always been the root of the problems in the Middle East. However, if we wanted to attack them first, we faced a number of challenges. First, Iran is a much bigger country wiht more resources and a bigger population. Second, although Iraq and Iran never got along, there was a small risk that by attacking Iran, Iraq would join the war and we would be fighting them both at the same time. Third, by attacking Iraq, we hoped to scare Iranians from pursuing their nuclear ambitions. And if attacking Iraq didn't scare the Iranians, we always would have a base for landing our planes and putting our tanks. Basically, it was a war strategy. Now, what went wrong? We underestimated the difficulties we would face after attacking Iraq. The opposition from countries such as Russia and France made it even harder to create a real coalition forces. And the troubles in Iraq have made Iran stronger in its resolve to pursue its nuclear ambitions. But at the end, it all comes down to security...security for the US and security for our allies in the Middle East and Europe.

Read Fiasco by Thomas Ricks. It's the best book yet on the war and he's not some liberal Bush-hater, but a long-time military journalist with a proven record of truly supporting the troops.

It's designed to make it safer for us by weeding out the terrorists. The most effective way would be to kill everyone but thats not how America works, instead we make a presence in a country and work from there.

Our president positioned us there in a greater healthy of fury over terrorism and attempting to act difficult to guard his call in the history e book because of the fact the president who stopped terrorism and positioned Islamic oil back below our administration. Why are we nonetheless there ? because of the fact its considered one of those mess that many harmless human beings will die merely because of the fact the Kurds did whilst they help-ted us in direction of the gulf conflict. If we did pull out then there could be a unfavorable civil conflict and we could not finally end up finding favorable to the oil countries there. If we went in we could desire to consistently have went in to assist the Kurds to take over the country, they have already got a greater democratic government, they fought alongside with us to oust Saddam, and that they could seem the ideal circulate between for Shiites and Sunni's. If we could like a larger Iran we could desire to consistently help the Shiites. ultimately, its taking until the subsequent election to with draw our troops so the Republicans can blame it on somebody else.

The President determined that it was in our national interest to overthrow Saddam.

Congress agreed with him, overwhelmingly.

Once you overthrow the dictator, you are obligated to stick around afterwards and get the new government you installed up and running. (Germany, Japan, etc etc etc)

End of Story.
