OTISVILLE -- A history of mental illness caused a standoff with local police Friday that ended with the death of Otisville's Kevin Simmonds, 31, according to Simmonds' family.

Simmonds' father, Daniel, said his son suffered from bi-polar disorder and was severely manic depressive and "he just kind of snapped" Friday, threatening locals as well as officers from the Michigan State Police and Genesee County sheriff's deputies.

The incident started about 5 p.m. Friday on Simmonds Drive near Cemetery and Dodge roads. Once police arrived Kevin Simmonds refused to surrender and suggested he had a weapon, prompting officers to shoot him. Simmonds died at Hurley Medical Center in Flint.

They don't give him time to get out and surrender, the police shot his truck 44 times and on him 6 times that finally killed him.

The demented person could have been injected or fire upon with a sleeping pill so that he could have been saved.

The guys own relatives said he "snapped." He got into a stand off with the Police and indicated he had a weapon.

The incident is under investigation and if an officer behaved inappropriately then he will be disciplined and possibly charged with a crime.

There isn't much available on this incident yet. However, if he made the officers believe he had a weapon, threatened to kill people, and failed to comply with the orders of the Police then I really don't know what you would expect the Police to do. Maybe they should have shrugged their shoulders, told the people in the area not to worry about it, the guy only has a mental illness, pack up their toys and leave. I mean its not like crazy people have been known to kill others in the past........oh wait people with mental problems do sometimes kill others.

Interesting thing about Police work is that we are Police Officers not shrinks. If a crime is committed (in this case Communicating Threats) then we are given the responsibility to make arrests not psycho analyze the criminal and find out why he did what he did. That is someone else's job.

After checking with the Associated Press--the following facts appear:
Police were called saying "An armed man is threatening people"
When they arrived at the wooded area, the man was hiding in the woods (Where is the truck?? The one that was shot 44 times???)
The man stated he was armed and after repeated requests by the State Troopers to surrender---the man was shot and killed.

No mention of 44 shots into a truck and six shots at the man.

Where did you get your information--? Or did you just make it up?

Regardless, I suggest that when it is reported to the police that an armed man is threatening people, and when the find the man and he says he is armed, and refuses to surrender, Let's have him brought to your house! You can play kissy feeley with him. What would you have the police do? Walk away?

One thing about your story REALLY bothers me---"police shot his truck 44 times and on him 6 times that finally killed him"--Those officers need better training. 50 shots?
My granddaddy said--one squirrel, one bullet.

It's interesting that this other guy mentions the police tazing the gentleman at the John Kerry speach.

"Nonlethal weapons" were developed to deal with situations just like this one in Ottsville. You can take a guy out with bean bags, rubber bullets, pepper spray, etc, and he'll still be alive for questioning. Instead we see them being used on guys who have not even committed a crime, and it's bullets as usual for folks that just don't have it all together.

sounds like somebody should have waited for a shooter to arrive but otherwise they did nothing wrong...maybe a little overkill but cops get scared too and a mental will kill you quick....his Dad is the one to blame for not getting him on his meds and keeping him there....if you dont want cops to help, dont call them...as to what would I do as his friend?..tell him to get another friend before he went off on me....the reason you have so many shots fired is the number of cops there...what do you do?...call 15 cops but tell only two they can shoot if he freaks on them?..ha ha ha

tough on him..if his Daddy was all worried about him,he should have gotten him help early on...my partner was shot and killed and my chief wounded by an emotionally disturbed 15 yr old whose grandmother couldn't keep him in control but she begged and pleaded with a juvie judge to let him come home with her...24 hrs later two officers were down....his grandmother says"hes a good boy"...yeah..ok...cops are bad..mean old cops...just live to kill....yeah...ok...as to your "question"..if he was my friend?..tell Daddy this freak needs his meds every day and make sure he gets them...good enough for you?...

Sorry, but should they wait until he killed someone. Bi-polar is manic-depressive. I sorry he either did not get treatment, or as they so often do, quit their meds. Yet, innocents should not be hurt.

I AGREE TO MUCH FIRE POWER AND WAS THERE A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO THIS SITUATION? ONLY THOSE THERE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER. I KNOW I KILLED TWO OVER MY CAREER AND HAD TO GO THROUGH HELL TO CLEAR MYSELF OF A RIGHTFUL ACTION I DID AND IT WAS JUSTIFIED IN THE END. THANK GOD I HAD FRIENDS AND THEN KNEW WHO WERE MY FRIENDS AFTERWARD AND WHO PRETENDED TO BE A REAL FRIEND.
