actually affect anything? Does it change points or alter anything other than the number mark?
And if it doesn't... why care about it? I would think people who only give thumbs up to their friends would be more offensive as those actually alter point tallies. Thoughts?
Or am I just missing the point?

No, it doesn't really effect anything - except it gives a rough idea of the opinions of others viewing that particular question and if we should take the answer seriously or not.
As a general rule, the most thumbs up means it is the most agreed and/or accepted answer by the current people on the question.
However, thumbs up and down can sometimes be unjustified or biased.

Hi,
It is really meaningless in many cases. I have seen some perfectly logical answers backed by good research and citations get thumbs down when they are not in agreement with the one asking the question or those who support his view.
In the past I have still got best answer with 3 or 4 thumbs down when the questionaire was in agreement with me or the question went to a vote.

Thumbs only affect your points if you get a best answer. If you get thumbs up, you get the standard ten points for best answer, plus one point per thumbs up.
This is limited however to only 50 thumbs up.

THUMBS DOWN MEANS YOU WERE NOT LIKE ABOUT THAT ONE ANSWER
AFFECT POINTS NO JUST DISGRUNTTLED PERSON WITH YOUR ANSWER

I think they will delete any answer that have voted 10th thumbs-down. I've seen one disappeared.

Thumbs up gives you a point, but I don't think thumbs down does anything.
