Yes that is a reality. More people outside have big barriers & give false projections.
Most patients confined in a mental hospital are more vocal and are true when they state or share there experiences not like some who are outside. This is primirally due to the fact that they have accepted that they have an issue regarding their mental health & want to resolved or give a solution to it, so in turn they are more expressive & barriers they use to have have been erased.

I agree totally, I think the people in the mental homes have accepted that they have a mental health issue and are seeking help by being there but those on the 'outside' do not or will not accept they have issues. Just be careful you do not end up with your own barriers around you again as after time its easy to slip back into that routine.

I'm sure the people inside have a better reality perception than the people on the outside. Everyone needs some type of counseling. We are a society that would rather bottle things up and hide our true identities instead of showing their real personalities.

I guess social constructs make people pretty artificial. In a mental hospital, I guess those who arent in denial lower their barriers. I guess they will raise them again when they get out, as a mechanism of dealing with modern life. Why not move to a rural area. People there are more natural, less guarded.

i have worked in a rehabilitation center as an apprentice, and yes i have observed that the patients are who have recovered from their disorders like yours are more real than the normal people, i guess since they have been through a lot of trouble for pretending to be someone they are not just to escape the pressure they are getting through other people including themselves. and now that they are treated and is now much better the last they want to do is to pretend to be someone who they are not, which only makes their condition worse.

yeah david ive found that but i think it probably has more to do with sharing an experience i did often wonder wether some of the staff should be receiving treatment as well! a minority of staff were genuine caring people but some were bullies and should never have joined the nursing profession.

I feel you I still keep contact with some people when I was in the hospital. I never felt so much love there. Everyone cared ever place you turn there was support.

i think for me personally it because i could relate to them and they were honest (for the most part) about thier need for help and willing to work on thier problems. also you spend a lot of time with them and a bond forms you see them with thier shields down and you dont see that often outside treatment facilities.plus most people inside are real while most on the outside are full of pretentions.

yes, that is true probably these people know about pain, sadness, loneliness, abuse and illness, so they care more because they know how it feels. By the way depression is very common, the forth most common illness of the world, it is treatable.
