I think they are overreacting. And I agree with others' answers : if you like a language and have learning language abilities, then it would be very easy. Relax and try !

Sometimes it's hard learning a new language, any new language, at the beginning. Then one day, it clicks! Some people have more of a natural aptitude for languages, but with hard work and practice anyone can learn a new language. Which language or culture interests you most? That should help with your decision. I've learned a few different languages. I would say that Spanish was the easiest language. French was the second easiest. I personally love the French language and French culture. Good luck!

French isn't especially hard, it's probably one of the easiest languages -- except that if you GO to France, they expect you to speak it PERFECTLY.

Some people have a natural ability to learn languages. If you don't, you can still learn it!

If I wanted to learn French, I'd buy a computer program. They make it EASY -- so I've heard!

Good luck!

French isn't that hard to learn. Its harder than spanish, but way easier than german or many other languages. My tips are to speak it as much as you can (even to yourself) while you are learning it, and also go on itunes and suscribe to a french learning podcast. They are free. I think you should do it, it really is a fun and beautiful language...and its not as hard as you'd think! I took 4 years of it, and I love the language!

Beginnings can always be difficult unless you have a good teacher ! It's his job to have you progress with steps within your reach. So, you needn't worry about the difficulty of the language.

But, I can also give you hope about reaching fluency in French. It happens quite often that, as a Frenchman, I am ashamed at how skilled foreign people are with French on TV, compared to our pour results. I think foreign people can reach impressive fluency with French, something only very few of us can achieve in other languages in fact...

I failed to learn English, then I switched to French. Once you like a language, it will be easy and fun to learn. I then became very good at French. After that, it took me a year to master English.
