Well, an interesting question.
I am real most of the time...it would be all of the time if it wasn't for being polite and certain business aspects.
I mean you can't tell a client that they are dumb as mud and don't understand the subject you are discussing.
That combined with being polite to people that ask questions that should never be asked...are the only times I pretend anything. I.E. does this dress make me look sexier? In the first place if someone asks me that I already think they are sexy and the dress has nothing to do with it. But, you can't say that...the best you can say is yes you are sexy in that dress...or in any other dress.
BUT, that isn't what your really asking, I hope. Those are just word games to be polite.
When I first started my career as a Tax Accountant...yes I pretended a lot. Well, at least I thought I did until I learned better. The pressure is very great...people understand that mistakes are made...but just not with their money. At the start I had a support system where I could ask for another opinion. I lost that when I moved to another job...then I learned that I was the one that knew what they were doing all along.
So, I acted (pretended) like I knew more than I did at the start of my career...but it turned out it was actually true. It was a lack of confidence in myself...in such a high pressure job. Or maybe it wasn't true...I knew the Tax laws...but over time I learned to comvince people that I knew what I was doing and learned what to say to relieve their fears. I guess which is true I will never know and it doesn't matter. I think both of them are true.
But, in my personal life...I have never pretended anything except the little white lies to be polite.
I hope this helps.

I try to be as real as I am. But alas, depending on who I'm by and what I'm doing, in certain situations, the nasty me can not make an appearance, because I know it will have consequences I'll regret etc. Also, I have a lot of versatile friends, thing I can easy talk about with one group, I can't with the other. * I have this thing where I tend to adapt a little from someone I meet, I guess the saying is true, if you start to hang around a person a lot, you'll pick up traits and start acting like them. So, somehow inadvertently they'll be cases where I'll start acting like someone else, but in the end I try to be true to myself, but it's hard.

I'm fake most of the time. I couldn't get along in society if I showed my 'real' face. Nobody would tolerate me.
Is it stressful? Yes, of course, because there are many people out there, especially men, who can get away with being arrogant, unkind, stupid, aggressive, and domineering without being ostracized.
Women with strong opinions are generally frowned upon and viewed a power mongers and difficult to get along with, but if a man says the same thing, he is wise, decisive, and insightful.
Just so I'm fake, giggling and showing my white, straight teeth...and acting like an airhead, I'm in! And it makes me sick inside!
The only time I'm real is on Y!A.

Well, to be honest, I pretend to be someone I'm not all the time... because people around me are in a certain way and I think that if I'm not like them (listening to same music, wearing same clothes, buying same stuff and watching some movies) then they won't accept me in their group. And is not that they are not real friends, because they are... they are friends with the person they know as me, even thought I'm not like that... they don't know it.

I think most of us are fake some times. We would have to be to conform to some of the rules of society but in saying so maybe it could be construed that we are being real in our fakeness so maybe we are being real all the time if our fakeness is real! LOL

I'm real 99.9% of the time. If I act any differently I get depressed with myself. And here in Los Angeles, I've found it's extremely hard to meet other people who are similar.
