I am about to get married in July and my girlfriend picked her sister as her maid of honor. I kinda thought that was tacky. I thought you are supposed to pick your best friend not a relative. But she chose her sister? WHY?

Maybe she considers her sister as her best friend. Most weddings that I have attended, the sister(s) were bridesmaids, as was I. There's a lot of responsibility that goes with being a Maid of Honor and perhaps the bride feels her sister is best equipped to handle the many duties.

Why would that be considered tacky, is that your own feelings you are basing that on or where are you getting that from?

I got married 13 years ago and my sister was my maid of honor because she besides being my sister she has and always will be with me and be the closest to me. Friends on the other hand sometimes aren't always around and may not be your friend 13 years from then, but your sister will always be your sister.

That is why I chose my sister to stand by me as my maid of honor, I don't know why that would be tacky.

I think that the bride can and should choose whomever she wants to be her maid of honor. Do you have a brother? If you did, and were good friends with him would you make him your best man? It's not fair to call your fiance's choice tacky. She choose the person to whom she is closest, ask her why, but by all means refrain from saying the words "tacky" and "sister" in the same sentence.

Well I have two maids of honor - neither one of them is my sister, they are my oldest, closest friends. My half-sister & I have never been very close, sad as it is, it would be just plain awkward if she were my MOH. However, most sisters are close & in that case I don't see any reason why they wouldn't ask them to be a bridesmaid or maid of honor. So no, its not tacky at all, its actually the norm.

Three is not too many bridesmaids at all! I had 3 in my wedding, one being the matron of honor (matron if she is married, maid if she is single BTW). I have been in a few weddings. In one wedding I was one of seven bridesmaids, and in another I was one of five I think. So three is a good number. Also, picking a MOH is difficult, but you have to think about a few things. Best friend, who had the most time, who is the most willing to help you, who won't back out and who will put up with your mind changing all the time!!! haha. I picked my best friend over my sister as my MOH because my sister works full time, has a child, a house, a husband, a business, and a lot of other things going on in her life. My best friend has 2 kids and a husband, but she only works part time, she is at my house all the time, we went shopping all the time and she was always willing to help me with ANYTHING! I do not regret it at all either.

My little sister is MY maid of honor because she is my absolute closest and best friend in the world.
Some people don't have close relationships with their siblings, but even if my sister were not my sister, she would still be the best friend I had.

PS: If you can't recognise the kind of relationship your own fiancee has with her sister, then I would have a good hard think about your relationship with HER. You should know and want to know, everything about her.

You are suppose to choose someone whome you feel is your closest friend. It is actually very common for a girl to choose her sister as her maid of honor. I chose my sister to be my maid of honor at my wedding last March because she is my best friend. I am a bridesmaid in a wedding in April and my friend chose her sister as her maid of honor even though her sister lives in Michigan and we are in Florida. She can choose whoever she wants to be her maid of honor and it is not tacky at all.

Well, maybe I'm lucky that my sister IS my best friend. I can't imagine anyone else as my matron of honor, even though I have two close girl friends. She's known me since I was born, and we've been through everything in each of our lives together. I was her maid of honor, too.

I picked my sister (who is 19 years younger than me) to be my maid of honor. I picked her because she loves my husband, she actually talked me into dating him when I wasn't sure (Long story...great guy, just a few years younger than me and played softball 6 nights a week...always said I wouldn't date a softball player because they seem to have priority problems).

My sister is the one person who I know will always love and care about both me and my husband...friends come and go and drift away, but sisters will always be there to remember that day with you!

Alot of girls are close to their sisters. Also, many sisters "expect" to be in the wedding and named as the maid of honor.
