Kittens knead on their mothers to stimulate milk flow. When you see an adult cat kneading it's a comfort thing to them. They're basically telling you that they are just totally in love with you and so happy to be there with you and then they feel safe and content :) I love when people call it "making biscuits" lol

What your cat is doing is called "milk treading" and he is doing it because he is relaxed and content and mimicking the motions he made while he was a nursing kitten.
Most cats do this to various objects or people. My last cat used to nuzzle my hair, purr and tread my pillow while I was trying to sleep! So your cat's behavior isn't wierd at all. He is just happy. It is basically the same thing they do as tiny kittens. My current cat is 18 months old and he's an "air treader" (as opposed to a "hair treader" ) (he lays on his back and "kneads" the air) but it's all the same.
You've got a very happy kitty while he's treading. He's showing you he trusts you and that he looks at you as if you were his mother because you are the one that provides for his needs and makes him feel secure and content!

My cat does that too. It could be that he was taken from his mother too young. Its something they do their mother. Its really a loving thing. If u dont like him doing it on your lap then get him a nice blanket. He will like it just as much.

My boyfriend who is unaccustomed to cats came running in to tell me that my cat looked like she was 'making bread' on my sweater left on the bed. Lol!
Seriously though, in adult cats it's a sign of comfort and contentment. In kittens, this is how they stimulate milk flow from their mom cats.

Kneading is inherent in felines. They do it because it feels good!! It goes back to when they were kittens feeding from their mother, they would knead mom's belly to stimulate milk production as they suckled.

It's a kitten trait in expressing milk. They see you as the mother and when they knead on you, they find security.

I always thought it was because they were taken away from their mother too early.

well since ALL cats do this, it has to be an instinctive thing, right? I believe it comforts them.
