I have a 5 yr old daughter who shares a room with her 10 yr old half sister... the 10 yr old is my step daughter. We get her every other weekend. Before I had my daughter, my step daughter had her own bed, own room.. When I had my daughter, she slept in her crib, then toddler bed.. Last year, I got bunk beds for them...which did not work out. I don't care for them and they don't really work well with the ceilings in my home and the way the room is situated (windows & heat air vent).

Right now, I have 1 twin bed (the last of the original bunk beds) in their room. The 10 y/o sleeps in there when she is here and my daughter has a "slumber party".

My question is - would it be wrong of me to get a double/full bed for them to share when the 10 y/o is here? Or would a day bed with a trundle work better, then they have their "own space". I could try 2 twin beds, but I really think that would take up most of the room and wouldn't leave a lot of play room.
I'm at a loss...THX!

We have a 3 bedroom home - we have a son as well who has his own room and no den, no basement.

Hopefully in the next 5 years or so, we will be able to move to a bigger home! :)

get a trundle. you want your step daughter to feel as if it is her room too since she is there so often. let her pick her own colors too.

I have a 2 yr old and a 3 yr old. We opted to get a trundle because the room is not all that big and it leaves more place room.
A Think a Trundle is best for personal space and play room!

A trundle bed would save space and allow each to have her own bed. That way, the 10-year-old won't complain that the 5-year-old is turning sideways and kicking her off, or turning head to foot and kicking her in the face... common problems when 2 children sleep in the same bed. And it's usually the smaller one kicking the bigger one.
I have 3 children visiting me a lot, and the trundle bed system works out well. We can leave it out or roll it away, whichever is more convenient. [The 3rd likes to sleep in a cardboard box because of her kicking habits....]

I don't think you should get them a double bed as in a couple of years (if not sooner) the 10yr old is going to want her own space. As they get older the differences between them will increase simply because the older child is going to become a teenager!

A trundle bed would solve your space problems whilst still allowing the girls to each have their own bed. It wouldn't interfere with their playspace either because it can be effectively "packed up" daily. It also gives you the option of removing one of the girls from the room without too much disruption should the need arise (ie: illness, bad behaviour etc.).

The trundle is your best bet.

Can you convert another room for the step child like an office that could double as her room when she is home?

I would try to give them each their own room somehow.

Well, you could always ask the kids what they think? Never know, they might be helpful!

take care.
