I'm a delivery guy for a Japanese resturant, I'm a high school student and I took the job because I need the money to pay for my bills.

I make 30$ a shift and I have to handle sushi and other "fragile" foodstuffs which I do well. I'm always at the customers house within the 15-45 min time provided I'm not making multiple deliveries at once and I can honestly say I'm very friendly to whoever I come across.

I take alot of **** from people when I have to go back and bring them something that was missing in their order and I always take it with a smile. Average tip= $4 no matter how much the bill is, or how many bags I'm carrying.

*Note* I pay for my own gas which over a week of work= nearly a full tank's worth. I mean I appreciate a $5 tip thats high in most cases, but when I get $2<$1 I remember that house much more than the $15 tipper.

What do you think is an appropriate tip rate for your delivery guy? (Sorry this was long winded)

No, its free delivery and $4 is decent if its in the local area, If I have to make a 15-20 min trip to your house 1-2 towns away and get there quickly, a $4 tip is just mean.

At the resturant I work at they hired a guy who bags all pickup/delivery orders, he is basically the guy who manages everything in the kitchen. I bag my deliveries when hes not around, however once its bagged its stapled shut, so no peeking :(

I was a cook/delivery driver for a LONG time.. (10 yrs).. and what I found was that people assumed we got paid more than we did.. (and that we got the full delivery charge)

Anytime I order delivery.. (not very often as I am broke at the moment) I tip at least $5.00.. if I can't afford the tip, I don't order or I pick it up. If someone goes out of their way, or the conditions are really bad.. or even if they just seem like they are having a bad day I will give a little more..

Now.. as for things being left behind.. I don't know your policies regarding the bagging and such.. but where I worked. If I forgot something it was most likely my own fault. Very rarely did I let people bag my deliveries for me.. and when I did I checked them before leaving. A few complaints would come in.. (they ordered the wrong thing.. or the cook made it wrong.. whatever) those I did have to go back for, but generally I wasn't too upset about it.

If your average tip is $4, I'd say that's pretty good compared to what most drivers got where I worked. $3 was average, maybe a little below that. I always tip a minimum of $3 (if I'm broke). $4 tip is my norm... $5 and up for harder job, bad weather conditions, more food, etc. It's a pretty thankless job. Hang in there!

I think most people don't realize that a delivery person's gas money comes from their tips. (which is precisely why I have avoided that particular job all my life) I've been doing my best to spread the word because people who tip $2 on deliveries piss me off. If people can't afford to tip the delivery guy, they should go pick up the food themselves.

Also, if your restaurant has a delivery charge, the customers probably assume that money is going to you.

You sound like you're doing pretty well averaging $4 a run. When I delivered pizza in the early '90's most every person I delivered to would stick out their hands and wait for every last cent to come back to them.
