My little boy has had a bad cold for close to a week. I took him to the Dr. Friday and they said it was a just a bug. They don't generally rule it a sinus infection unless the cold sticks around for 2 or more weeks. I think it may be heading that direction, but not quite sure yet. Does anyone know what I can do to help my little guy? Already doing Tylenol. I feel so bad for him, he's so congested.
Thanks~

Oh I hear your pain....this is the first year I have my four year old in nursery school and oh my gosh, I think I'm the only parent who actually goes by the guidelines and keeps her home when she is coughing and has a runny nose because lately I hear them all coughing and sneezing and no kidding it seems like within two weeks she back down again. aagh

I'm from down under and we are vicks lovers so I have always used vicks on mine, from baby right through to now....they make a Vicks for babies but by this age they are okay to use the regular. Rub some on his back and some on his chest and elevate his head.
I also find that if I have the nasal aspirator handy after the shower...where the mucous tends to loosen...suction away and it helps for bed time.
You can get a VICKS humidifier too that allows you to pour a liquid VICKS into a little dish attached and when the steam is released, it takes the vapor with it too.
Also, believe it or not but a well ventilated room is amazing too, take him out for a bit to get some fresh air, or crack his window ever so slightly.

Good Luck hope it all clears up soon for you.

aww i feel bad for him!i hope he feels better!well i have a 4 year old brother and he hates taking medicine. So what my step mom did was she told him to take the tylenol(or any other medicine) and he would get a surprise(it can be playing together for almost the whole day or getting him a cheap toy that he will love or it can be playing a game with him....ect.)Also I dont think there is much you can do except give him warm baths and dressing him warmly and making sure he doesnt get cold...oh and also after his bath make sure you blow dry his hair or he will catch cold that way too.after you give him a bath wrap him up in a blanket and have him relax.but for the congetstion theres nothing you can do except what you are doing right now.give him tylenol and keep him warm.....maybe try to use those nose drops for little kids.I think one of them is called Little Noses.Good luck!tell him i hope he feels better.

poor guy what i do for mine is (and this might be difficult with the recent recalls) treat the symptoms that he has try to find a med that says its for congestion and fever if you can't find that they make this vicks vapor bath, give him a nice warm almost hot but not to hot bath but don't get his head wet, he could catch a chill, then get him in his pjs put vicks on his chest prop him up push juice and anything high in B6, try to stay away from milk, yogurt and cheese are better when sick for dairy servings. Warm moisture humidifiers are best this time of year, then this is my personal secret. give him otc allergy meds at night to knock their little butts out. it helps with the snuffles and sleep. good luck

yes vicks is very good for colds/coughs you could also try eucalyptus oil bought at supermarkets/chemists and its got directions on the bottle usually 1 tsp to 1 litre of boiling water in a heatproof bowl ) either get him to sit with his face over the bowl with a towel draped loosely over his head. OR just putting the bowl in his bedroom where he can't reach it so the vapours fill his room (it helps to clear his chest and nose = A BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP.try putting vicks &socks on his feet sounds strange but it works for my 3 yr old.

Poor little guy! There's not too much you can do at this point - just give him lots of love, apple juice, a little benadryl before bed, and prop the head of his bed up at night so he can breathe and sleep easier.
