The automobile is America's number one murder weapon too. Kitchen knives are second. Blunt objects are third. Then poisons.

On duty: deaths and there causes are at fbi.gov. They also break it down by region. This year the recent trend of gunshots deaths becoming greater and greater continues. Traffic is always the biggest cause.
Off duty: heart attack followed by cancer (the odd hours seem to increase police cancer rate as compared to the general population) and suicide. Most of the suicide numbers are estimates but police as a group consistently are in the top tier for suicide, along with dentists.

While officers are taught that a domestic is one of the most dangerous calls they can respond to, a domestic dispute is not a common cause for a LOD death. Automobile related incidents, whether vehicle vs. vehicle, or vehicle vs. ped, kills many officers.

In australia they get bored to death and half of them have been dead for years and don't know it.
