He's about 4 months old now. There's a fly in our apartment and he was sitting there, it sounded at first like he was trying to meow and nothing was coming out but then he just started making clicking noises and totally sounded like a chipmunk or squirrel. Does anyone elses cat do this? Does anyone have any idea what that is?? I've had many cats and none have ever done that.

Many times! It is called 'chattering'.

Cat behaviorist are not sure why cats chatter, but think it is related to the hunting instinct.

I love to watch my cats at the window chattering the birds at the feeder. It's so funny.

Purrs to you and your kitty.

I just adopted a 6 month old kitty who does the same thing! I've owned cats throughout my life and none of them had ever done that before. It was so strange; it sounded like she'd swallowed a bird! I researched it online, and apparently it's somewhat of a beckoning sound to birds and other potential prey to make them think one of their own kind is near. Too bad for my kitty that 1) the bird's outside and she's in; and 2) the bird's the same size as my cat, so I don't know if she'd be successful even if she were outside! :P

I think my cat may win the prize for noises. She uses every tone she can possibly come up with, and she makes a huge variety of noises. She hollers to wake me up, and if I don't get up she'll start making as much noise as she can by clawing a box in the room. As she's trying to ramp up the noise she's producing with her claws she looks back over her "shoulder" to see if its doing any good. She does this really creepy, way-down-low (but not a growl by any means) thing where she seems to be attempting to use a human voice and make sounds as if she's trying to talk, but, of course, she can't form words. Its almost a squawky little talking sound. I have read that if you try to communicate with your cat by talking the cat will attempt to communicate back by using her voice.

Ha! Check out this video It is of a cat doing the same thing at some birds outside. http://www.petplace.com/cat-videos.aspx?p=3
It's a noise often associated with hunting or annoyance. (our clinic cat where I work does it when you put her in here kennel it's her way of letting you know she isn't happy. And my roommates cat does it when you tell her to get off the cabinet, it's her way of back talking!)

One of my cats makes those kinds of sounds the others don't, I think it is a hunting thing. Maybe they want to sound like a bird to hunt things, been told that by people but not sure if it is truw? Many cats do this, very cute noise :)

I have 4 adult cats and 7 kittens, which are getting new homes - soon, anyway, each of them have thier own special meows, and one of them sounds really raspy - so yeah, they make wierd noise sometimes. Just like some people make weird noises.

Sounds like the "hey Mom I see dinner" noise. Cats make it when they see a bird outside the window, or a mouse in the house, or in your case a fly. It's a hunting noise which probably serves no purpose, like purring.
