I have a picture of my little sister in my locker. One of my friends saw it and told me that my little sister was cute. I wasn't really sure of what to say so I just replied by saying that she was seven years old. Should I have said thank you? She did offer a complement but it wasn't to me directly...What do I say if it happens again?

I'm not getting paranoid...It's happened more than once and I'm just asking if I should have said thanks or something else

I don't think it's something you need to thank your friend for since she technically wasn't complimenting you. But I guess you could if you wanted to. Or, smile and say something like, "And she's really smart, too!" and change the subject if necessary. Or, "Do you have any little brothers and sisters?" Best of luck!

Even if it wasn't addressed to you directly, she was basically complementing you for having such a cute little sister. Next time it happens, just say "thank you".

I would probably say thank you. But if you feel that saying thank you is odd then next time you can make some sort of joke. Like . . . see how cute she is after living with her . . . or . . . not for long . . . I'm sure you can come up with something better, but you get the drift.

Oh, I'll tell her that, she'll be pleased. Thanks.
This way it makes it sound like you're thanking them for giving you the opportunity to brighten her day.

Thank you, since she is cute...we are going to keep her!
Yes, she is cute....but what a brat!
or worse...Thank God for touch ups!

Just agree with them :) Say something like..Isn't she? and smile. Or maybe ask "do you think we look alike?" That is, if you two are related and not step-kids.
