Invention is creativity. An engineer is someone who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems. An engineer can be an inventor but not necessarily be an inventor.

Not necessarily.
An inventor can be most probably an engineer by graduation. But not the reverse.
An engineer can fit as a designer. As an assembler or a mechanic or a consultant. An assembler in the sense, he is involved in production of an inventor's product. A mechanic in the sense he assists in repairs and remodeling.

An engineer is a person who can take the ideas of an inventor and make them work. Engineers probably hold a large number of pattens.
There are many types of engineers, chemical, industrial, electrical, telephone, sound and electronics, just to name a few.
On a typical day they might be an on site inspector, overseeing the construction of a building project. Or working with a team to improve a new communication system. Or in a lab researching a new method to cure cancer.
Hope this helps.

I guess it depends on what your term of definition is. If you are saying you are designing some from scratch and building it yourself.
Well then Florist, Bakers, hell everybody is an inventor if they build something.
If you are saying that as an engineer you have developed a product that has never been developed before. And you can get a patent on it. Then techincally you are now an inventor according to the patent office.
Drawing plans and designing this building that has never been built before but using things from ideas that are already there, doesnt make you an inventor. I think it makes you an artist.

No. An engineer is not an inventor. Most processes in engineering are the antithesis of invention. Think of it like you would think of a pilot: do you really want your pilot to "invent" new ways of flying the plane you are sitting in or do you want him or her to judiciously exercise the best practices known about flying that machine?
Same with engineers, especially if they have to design potentially dangerous things like bridges and buildings which HAVE TO WORK OR ELSE...
However, once in a while every engineer is confronted with a problem that is new and they have to invent something new to solve it. Which means that engineers can invent and do invent, but they do not see their mission like "the inventor" does. An engineer is usually a person who wants to find a solution to a practical problem in the best, safest and cheapest way possible. In most cases that is an optimization problem and not one of excessive imagination.

The primary job of an engineer is not to invent, although the training might well prepare a person to recognize new solutions to problems.
The primary job of an engineer is to examine or design structures that will meet strength requirements economically. That means spending a lot of time analyzing loads, stresses, strains, flows, torques, tensions, etc. to see if the design is safe and to determine if material or cost savings can safely be carried out with changes.

Someone that's an engineer could be an inventor. But engineers are more problem solvers. If you are interested in the specifics of what various types of engineers do there are lots of websites.

No, few engineers spend very much time
working on inventions. Since the only thing
you mostly ever find with idiot inventions is
that GM has already locked the Patent Office Door.

An engineer is a problem solver using a systematic methodology and a well-known library of truths. Sometimes this solution is an invention. More often it is an integration of inventions.

no they are not specifically inventors. however, they often invent.
generally, depending on the discipline, engineers verify things or design specific things. they also determine how to correct or repair, whether dams in danger of collapse, or, buildings in need of being strengthened.
