Yes but if someone does something nice for you saying thank you isn't excessive.

I think it depends on the person and how they perceive it. For instance, right now I work in a restaurant and we are expected to be very friendly, very deferential to our guests. Never seem irritated with them, etc. I suppose you could take this as being lower, or not feeling worthy but I choose to see it as acting. I don't actually think or feel all the things I tell my tables or the way I act towards them. It's just my job to make them feel like they are not being an inconvenience or making unreasonable demands, etc.
