Tacos are pretty basic: meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato....

What makes a great taco stand apart from the rest?

I've been waiting my whole life for this question!
!
Great tacos are bad for you, that's why they're so good!! A great taco should contain shredded beef which is lightly seasoned and not too greasy or wet. You can use ground beef in an emergency. Chicken ought not to be used in tacos....everybody knows that! Next, you need a GOOD QUALITY corn tortilla. Put the meat in the tortilla and pan fry it in about 1/2 inch of peanut oil (it withstands high temperatures better). The taco needs to be flipped onto the other side after about 1 minute or until it is golden brown and crunchy (but not brittle) on both sides.

Next, add your favorite hot sauce or salsa; slather it right over the meat. Next comes the cheese and onions (don't talk to me if you're not putting onions on your taco). Then comes the shredded lettuce. Yes! It MUST be shredded! Here's an important note: DO NOT ADD TOMATOES!!! They're already in the salsa, silly! Finally, a good layer of sour cream and a quick sprinkle of salt and you're ready to enjoy a great taco! Be sure to wash it down with a good margarita! Use only PATRON tequila, of course!

any time a food seems basic enough that you ask a question like this, the answer is probably the quality of the ingredients, or ingredients you hadn't thought of (like the seasoning someone else mentioned). make it fresh, with good ingredients to start, and do the little things like adding seasonings to the meat or onions as their being cooked, toasting the shell... ect. and it'll be better then most.

It's all about the ingredients. All meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomato are NOT created equal. Also, don't skimp on the toppings!

Make your own taco seasoning, rather than using a packet, use Mexican cheese, use chunky salsa or pico de gallo instead of tomatoes, and squeeze a bit of fresh lime juice on it. YUM!
