I'm an only child and always asked for a brother or sister when I was growing up, I was so lonely. Also I was jealous of my friends who had siblings. It was always so much fun going to there homes.
As an adult I still don't like being an only child, but for different reasons. My father passed away 9 years ago and since then the responsibility of my mom is all mine. Driving her everywhere, cooking for her, helping her financially, doctors appointments, I could go on forever. Their is nothing physically wrong with her, but I have to pick up where my father left off. I have no one else to share this with, no siblings to relive some of the stress that she brings. No one to help when she's short on her bills. No one to take her to the store when all I want to do is put my swollen feet up (b/c I'm preggo). I'm telling you I could go on forever!
All this and I'm only 29 and she's only 53.
When everyone considers if they should have only one child, everyone's main concern is when the child is small. No one thinks about when the child is an adult and they are the soul support person helping the parents.
If the parent is 53 or 73, their will be a time when the parent has to rely on their children and when it's just one child, that's a lot to handle. It's much easier when their is a sibling to help.

I am an only child. It didn't bother me either. Most of my friends when I was growing up would complain about their siblings. I didn't mind it being just my Mom and myself in the house. As an adult I did decide to have two kids because I was in the military and family wasn't around so I wanted them to at least have each other to play with. At times they didnt get along, now that they are a tad bit older 9 and 11 they get along a little bit better.

I come from 9 but my 2 kids are 13 yrs apart. My daughter now 16 wishes that I hadn't waited so long to have another baby. I have a 16 yr old, a 3 yr old and am hoping for another in about a yr so that my little one won't be an only.
I feel like the mother of 2 only children and my oldest says that it can be lonely so we are trying to do a little better for our youngest!

I am technically and only child but I do have a step brother and step sister but they are way older than me.
It has its positives and negatives. I think it would have been nice to have a sibling. But Christmas ROCKED I was the only one and I got SPOILED! :)
Boyfriend is an only child and he said it was fine. But they had a lot of family friends and his mom did daycare so he was surronded by kids that were somewhat like siblings. He claims not to be spoiled.

I was. When I was an only child I kept wishing for a younger sibling, then when I got it it was a disaster! We're nine years apart. But it's okay...sometimes. So it's lonely to be an only child, but it's hard to have a little sibling.

My father was married to someone before my Mom and they had two children. From my mother I am an only child. Then he remarried when I was 9 (my Mom died), and they have 3 kids. So, from my biological Mom and Dad, Yes, I am an only child and I love being the only one born from them.

I used to WISH I had been an only child. I've got three too many brothers and one too many sisters. Birth control was apparently a foreign concept to my parents.
