Asceticism - the self-deprivation of worldly things for the sake of personal Christian growth is most likely an acceptable practice as long as it is (1) not carried to extremes such as becoming a hermit (2) worshiped in and of itself - Asceticism for Asceticism's sake or (3) takes you away from the teachings of Jesus. There will certain things in your life that will stand in your way of a proper relationship with Christ and all of us who are sicere about their Christianity must find ways to deal with them. However - I'm not so sure it is wise to focus on what is wrong with ourselves as it relates to sin but rather what is right about seeking Christ and his teachings - making them a part of your life and your service to others and trusting the Spirit to lead you through the webs of your own inadequacies and sinfulness.

The only thing I can think of in mainstream Christianity is celebacy, becoming a priest or a nun. There are some extremists for example in Mexico where they tie themselves on a cross for three days and I'm sure if you do some research you can come up with more.

The Indians or Buddhism are more knowledgeable of that than Christians.

For Christian traditions, I believe as a Roman Catholics, our Clergy are on it.

Well many of us do fast. Also death to self is what is required for the annointing of God to flow. Since we believe the body is the temple of the holy spirit there is no reason to mutilate ourselves however.
