I just got done writing an 8 page essay and when I press enter to make a new paragraph it makes an extra space between the two paragraphs (it's already double-spaced) which I remember my professor specifically telling us not to do. Does anybody know how to get rid of that? I tried looking for it through Format: Paragraph but I could not find a thing. Thanks guys.

When you want a new paragraph, press ENTER only one time.

In Word 2003 and previous versions this will format the document correctly when you have double spacing selected (Format-> Paragraph, click the Line Spacing drop down and choose Double)

In a single spaced document you press ENTER two times to create the blank line between paragraphs.

In Word 2007 Microsoft decided that the default paragraph formatting should include Space After/Space Before each paragraph. This means you only press ENTER one time for correct single spacing, but double spacing will have too much extra space.

Go to Formatting -> paragraph and change the Space After and Space Before numbers to zero.

you're on the right track ... format ... paragraph ...line spacing ... you'll see it on the lower right hand side of the window.
You will need to highlight (select) the area you want to reformat
