Concerned about your child's gaming habits? Your life is about to be made easier -- at least, if your family owns an Xbox 360. Microsoft, the console's manufacturer, plans to include a "Family Timer" in the 360's Fall System Update, due to roll out to all Internet-connected consoles on December 4.

The Family Timer, a feature that's unique to the Xbox 360, allows parents to set a maximum amount of daily or weekly time that their kids can use the console. The unfortunate youth will receive a series of warnings as their time expires before being kicked out when the countdown reaches zero. Parents can override the timer if they feel their offspring deserves extra gaming privileges, or disable it altogether if they fancy a little play once the kids are in bed.

Downloading the update will be automatic if your Xbox is connected to a broadband network, and the update process should take less than a minute, Microsoft's Group Project Manager Adam Greenberg told Yahoo!. Once downloaded, parents can find the Family Timer settings by going to the "System" blade of their console's main menu. The timer can be set in 15-minute increments, and you can always ask the kids for help -- although you may not want to let them know what you're planning to do.

Yeah, I read about that article on Yahoo about a hour or so ago.

It's just Microsoft's way of getting in the spot light. Most Xbox 360 owners are older teens and up, and their parents don't even know how to operate a Xbox 360 and most Xbox 360 owners are old enough to do whatever they want without parental supervision.

I don't care what Microsoft puts on thier faulty Xbox 360's, it will never be what the PS3 is. Anyways, the PS3 already has a feature somewhat like what the Xbox 360 has just gotten because when you create a profile on the PS3, you can password protect it so that no one can access your profile when the PS3 is first turned on unless the correct password is put in.

Boy if i were a kid I'd want my parents to run out and buy that system. (NOT) If you think you are helping microsoft , then ask them to remove the ability of strangers to look at our kids gamer info including games owned and buddy lists.

Why cause if some of the games owned are for younger people then creepy people can assume they are young and start making contact with their friends on the list....

Anyway the master code will be out in no time on the net. You see I rely on good parenting...you know having two tv's in the room so that while the kid is playing on one you can watch the news or something and when You say stop the kids gets off.

Can you say Microsoft is desperate because the family systems are wii and ps3. THe violent and gore system is the 360

I have kids and there is no need for a timer on my PS3! When I say it is time to quit then it gets turned off! I think it would be a waste of data to put in a family timer!

Wow, Microspot is making so much noise about an update of their firmware! Sony does it at least once per two-three months. Microspot tries to fill their multimillion dollar hole created by 33% return rate. Suicide bombers must love 360 due to it's self-destructive ideology.

Wow, using technology as a boundary setter for your children. Tell them to get off and make sure they do it. If they don't want to listen then take the system away.

haha nahh mate sony is to smart to create this. it would cut down time kids play so that means less games would be sold because it takes longer to finish the game or longer to get over the game.

also sony spend their time creating better things to upgrade the ps3 they dont spend their time DOWNGRADING the PS3, like microsoft are doing.
