Actually I did answer my home phone the same way that I used to at a previous job I had..."thanks for calling abc corporation how may I help you?...." - the caller(to my home) was as dumbfounded as I was and then all I could do was laugh hysterically to say the least. Its weird I know but you get so used to answering the phone that way that when it rings at home you go into auto mode, especially if the phone rang continuously at work that day.
I think it is a simple courtesy to say thank you for calling. I know its tedious and wastes a lot of time that the caller doesn't have but it also makes you slow down and listen to that person a bit.
You are right that the person answering the phone is not sitting doing nothing but waiting on the phone to ring, these days the employer requires that you are multitasking and doing at least the work of 2 people. However, I think you are missing the point of why the employer requires it. They want that person to say it so that there is a bit of respect and repore going between the caller and the person from that company. It helps to establish contact and lets the caller know that the person they are talking to cares about why they are calling.

Answering the phone with "thank you for calling XYZ" is actually the proper way to anwser the phone at a business. It lets the person on the other end know that you appreciate their business and it lets them know that they are dealing with a professional company. Of course people don't answer the home phone this way, why would they, they aren't trying to get someone to spend money or time on them. If I called a company and they answered the phone "Hello" or "Yeah, this is John" I wouldn't feel that the company was very professional and I would likely not do business with them, simple as that. I want to be greeted and treated professionally. I do agree that incoming calls from diallers are annoying. This goes right along with my pet peave of poor service at drive through restaurants. But to answer your question, Answering the phone the way you described IS professional and it IS courteous.

Well, too be honest I don't know who came up with the idea but in my opinion having worked more than a year in a 5 star hotel it is important to have some form of polite greeting...frankly our greeting was Thank you for calling ___, this is ___ at your service. And as much as it may seem a bother it shows appreciation to the caller and also lets them know where they are calling. The worst thing to hear when you call a business is- hello?... hello who or what? know what i mean. and for arguments sake you can simply say the name of the business but then to add a simple thank you just makes the person feel a little more welcome. what was always stressed in our training sessions is to smile when you answer because it ain't fun to hear a person answer the phone and they sound bored or not interested to speak to you. that's one sure way to kiss your clients good bye. as a little exercise you can try calling to a few businesses and see what feeling and answers you get from the agent or respondent. that may open up a new way to look at it, who knows. thats about all i can offer, hope i was helpful and in light of your question- silly or stupid?...to be honest to me it's second nature now so it doesn't seem that way.

I've never thought that this greeting meant that the business was desperate to hear your call because they had nothing to do. Instead I see it as a way for the business to thank you for your interest in their products and/or services, and to leave the customer with a positive feeling, which will hopefully generate more revenue for them.

You know what, I'm with you on the phone thing, which is why I love email, but don't let it get the best of you. Life's too short.

They say this because they are a business. They are thanking you for patronizing them. It's like the cashier saying 'thank you for shopping at ABC'.

I have always opted for "Thank you for choosing _______". Just a personal preference because I do feel like saying "thank you for calling" is like saying "oMgZ! I've been waiting for something to do!" haha
