There are a number of reasons:
1. The truth may seem complicated to explain.
2. They may be afraid of the consequences.
3. They might be ashamed or just embarrassed about an aspect of the truth.
4. They might be using an untruth in order to obtain something they don't think they could get honestly.
5. They might just enjoy manipulating people.
6. They might use an untruth in an effort to gain admiration they don't think they really deserve.
7. They might use an untruth in order to hurt someone they perceive to be an enemy.
Well, those are some of the possible reasons.

Regardless of why it is so hard for an individual to tell the truth, in the end, the truth WILL set them free. The guilt of knowing one has lied is a heavy burden for most. Heavier than the negative consequences of that lie.

My ex-husband has Negativistic Personality Disorder with strong Passive-Aggressive behaviors, and I'm not sure if an honest word has ever fallen from his lips (and if one did, it may have been completely accidental)!

I think that there are two primary reasons for his lying: 1) he is ashamed of the truth, and 2) he doesn't have the guts to deal with any confrontation associated with telling the truth - but the irony being that the lies he tells create massive, blow-out confrontations that are probably much larger than any original confrontation may have been.

Label it whatever you want, but chronic liars like that simply lack integrity.

Truth rocks.
why lie?

If you have to lie there's no point in talking.

Plus it shocks the hell out of people when you tell the truth.

Because they don't like the truth, and it's easier to lie than to admit the truth.
