When the Bible talks about the destruction of Babylon, is it the spiritual Babylon, or the actual "Babylon" which would be present day Iraq?

Both. The literal Babylon, in present day Iraq, was literally destroyed. According to other prophecies, it will never be rebuilt or reinhabited (Isaiah 13) but some scholars believe there will be another city by that name in the future. Revelation 17 and 18 describe such a city, but we don't know when that new city will be built (see John Phillips' books, Exploring Revelation, and, Exploring the Future. These are available at Christian Book Distributors, or www.christianbook.com ).

Spiritual Babylon is the false system that tries everything in its power to corrupt, dilute, ruin, or otherwise destroy the true Christian faith. That, too, will be destroyed some day in the future and I personally will be happy when it goes!

It's false religion, spiritual Babylon

Isaiah’s words were fulfilled 2,500 years ago. However, the words recorded at Isaiah 47:8 are quoted in the book of Revelation and given a future application. There the Bible foretells the end of the harlotlike organization called “Babylon the Great”, the world empire of false religion. (Revelation 16:19) The designation “Babylon” for the false religions of the world is appropriate, since it was in ancient Babylon that false religion got its start. From there it spread to the four corners of the earth. Religious doctrines that originated in Babylon, such as the immortality of the soul, hellfire, and the worship of triune gods, are shared by virtually all religions, including Christendom.

Ever since the emergence of ancient Babylon, false religions have exercised a tremendous influence on humanity through their leaders and supporters; their doctrines, traditions, and practices; their numerous imposing buildings for worship; and their incredible riches. They will certainly not disappear unnoticed. Therefore, the angel entrusted with conveying the message of judgment upon the harlot does not mince words when he declares: “In one day her plagues will come, death and mourning and famine, and she will be completely burned with fire, because Jehovah God, who judged her, is strong.” So Babylon the Great’s end will come like a bolt from the blue and will pass by quickly, as if “in one day.”

The time has arrived for judging the peoples of earth, the nations, and someone else. Who is that?

It is a figurative woman who has really tried to make herself “someone.” She is described at Revelation 17:5 as “a mystery: ‘Babylon the Great, the mother of the harlots and of the disgusting things of the earth.’” But she is no longer a mystery. She has clearly identified herself as the world empire of false religion, of which Christendom’s sects make up the dominant part. Disgusting in God's eyes are her dabbling in political affairs, her becoming “drunk with the blood of the holy ones” by persecuting true Christians, and her being responsible for the blood “of all those who have been slaughtered on the earth,” including more than a hundred million killed in the wars of this 20th century alone. Revelation 17:2, 6; 18:24.

With such a future staring world religions in the face, what should you do? The answer is in what John heard a voice out of heaven saying: “Get out of her, my people, if you do not want to share with her in her sins, and if you do not want to receive part of her plagues.

what does Daniel 2:44 say about the result? “In the days of those kings [present political powers] the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin, It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite.”

Babylon was one of the most beautiful cities ever
with hanging flowers and flowering bushes everywhere.
But the King, Nebucannezer, just wanted all the credit
for himself. He required everyone to bow down to his
god, but Shadrack, Meshack, and Abidnigo would not.
So, he threw them in a furnace that was hotter than any
fire ever was, so hot that his men who threw them into
that fire, were vaporized from the heat. But, God protected
His own and none of the three were burned, smoked,
vaporized, or in any way hurt. That was theBabylon of the
Old Testament (you'll find the story in the Book of Daniel).
