Wow -- that is awful! The minute he spit on the plate, you should have gone to the manager of the restaurant. Spitting on your food was an act of violence that needed to be reported. And when he went after your boyfriend's mother, the police should have been called.

Unfortunately, the man should have gone to the manager first, not directly to you. The manager could have handled this tactfully to everyone's satisfaction. A good manager would have explained that this was a family restaurant and that your child's voice, while loud, was still in the acceptable range (I'm assuming it was) and that if he had a problem, he could change tables. And if your child's voice was too loud, the manager could have tactfully asked you to soften the noise level.

The only time this happened to us was in a diner. And the people behind us stormed out of the restaurant. I didn't know why until the owner of the restaurant told us why. And when we apologized, he said, "Don't apologize. Your kids were fine. They were laughing and bringing joy to this restaurant. If the people behind you couldn't see that, then they don't belong here!" That was the owner that said that!

Anyway, I'm sorry you had to witness such an ugly scene.

While there is no excuse good enough to make what he did ok, I have been a little to near kids in a diner to know what you think of as cute and normal is not everbodies elses idea.

That said...he was insufferably rude and you should have called the manager and complained, at least had the food that was spit on replaced..ugh.

The guy was a total shithead and I would have complained to the manager and had him thrown out. And had him pay for a new meal for the one he spit on. Maybe even called the police.

were your children acting inappropriately or in any way interrupting another person's meal? if you can honestly answer "no", then blow the guy off. if your children were acting like normal kids, they may have interrupted another person. consider taking the mature stance and bringing things to keep the kids occupied, like snacks and small toys or crayons in the future. eat only at family friendly restaurants and remember that yours is not the only family in a restaurant.

I've never had that happen to me, but if it did, I would have called over the manager and then the cops on him. Spitting in your food is, essentially, assault. He had no right to do that.

No, I can't say this has ever happened to me. I would have immediately gotten the manager and had him or her deal with it, and if necessary, kick the guy out. If that didn't work, I would have called the police since the guy harassed you after you told him to leave you alone.
