These are the definitions of an Atheist and an Agnostic...so I think that the "defaut" position would be Agnostic.

http://www.atheists.org/Atheism/
Atheism is a doctrine that states that nothing exists but natural phenomena (matter), that thought is a property or function of matter, and that death irreversibly and totally terminates individual organic units. This definition means that there are no forces, phenomena, or entities which exist outside of or apart from physical nature, or which transcend nature, or are “super” natural, nor can there be. Humankind is on its own.

Agnosticism implies uncertainty about the existence of God. The basic problem here is that there are many answers to the question "Does God exist?" However there is only this one term available to cover all of the meanings. Some of today's possible overlapping answers to the question are:

I don't personally know.

I don't know but will lead my life in the assumption that no God exists.

I don't know but will lead my life assuming that God does exist.

I cannot give an opinion because there is no way that we can prove the existence or non-existence of God given currently available knowledge.

I cannot give an opinion because there is no way to know, with certainty, anything about God, now and in the future.

Yes, God exists. But we do not know anything about God at this time.

Yes, God exists. But we have no possibility of knowing anything about God, now or in the future.

Are Agnostics Atheists?
Agnostics are not Theists. Agnostics do not believe in a God, or a Goddess, or in multiple Gods, or multiple Goddesses or in a pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. However, some Agnostics consider themselves to be Atheists.

I consider myself to be an agnostic for the reason that I think that it is not possible to prove either the existence or nonexistence of "God" or of a creative deity. I see no reason, however, that such an entity, should he/she be extant, could not have worked through the Big Bang and Evolution to produce the Cosmos, the Earth, and the creatures who populate it, including the current species of human beings (homo sapien). I am nonreligious and nonreverent and resent religion's intrusion into government and into my personal life. My philosophies define me as agnostic in my opinion,

An agnostic is one who holds to the philosophical stance known as agnosticism.

Agnosticism holds that knowledge of the existence or non-existence is unavailable or unattainable to human beings.

An agnostic theist would hold that there is a revealed deity -- this would be paradoxal. One cannot believe in a revealed deity but hold that knowledge of it is unattainable.

An agnostic deist would hold there is a non-revealed deity, but acknowledge there is no way to know for sure.

An agnostic atheist would hold there is no deity at all, but acknowledge that they cannot prove it or know it for sure.

Agnosticism does NOT mean that the person believes in a god but doesn't know anything about it. That's deism.

Atheists have the mind to work out interior the process the conditioning and escape into the real international!! Agnostics have the mind to work out interior the process the conditioning yet lack the braveness to throw of the conditioning completely. regrettably Christians are nonetheless held firmly prisoner by using the self perpetuating brainwashing!!

I don't think anyone above really knows what it means... if they are quoting dictionaries that obviously have no clue (and differing definitions)

... and the answer below sounds like an atheist to me... a lack of uncertainty or a lack of proof does NOT make one an agnostic... or we'd ALL be agnostics

Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God is impossible to be known or proven. The word “agnostic” essential means “without knowledge.” Agnosticism is a more intellectually honest form of atheism. Atheism claims that God does not exist – an improvable position. Agnosticism argues that God’s existence cannot be proven or unproven – that it is impossible to know whether God exists. In this concept, agnosticism is correct. God’s existence cannot be empirically proven or disproven.

Agnostics claim either that it is not possible to have absolute or certain knowledge of the existence or nonexistence of God or gods; or, alternatively, that while individual certainty may be possible, they personally have no knowledge

Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.

The belief that absolutes are unscientific and have never been observable anywhere in the natural world---like saying that there is absolutely no God or that there is absolutely a God.
