While God is mentioned in passing in the Declaration of Independence (Which did nothing but start a war) God is not mentioned once in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights and the Treaty of Tripoli specifically states in Art 11 (Voted on unanimously by the same "Christian" founding fathers that everyone goes on about) That America was in no way founded on Christianity. So I think it's fair to say that America was founded because of Christianity (escaping persecution.....though they did just come over here and do it to each other) but not founded ON it.
And please remember that One Nation Under God wasn't added to the pledge until the 1950's and In God We Trust wasn't added until the very late 1800's and had nothing to do with the founding or creation of the US

It is the Gold and not God which came first but followed by a coat of God to hoodwink the public. If God is all powerful and all (even heathens) are His children, then how come he remains silent when his strong and powerful sons kills, rapes his weak children & driven to poverty. So either He is powerless (which He is not) or incapable of handling his powerful sons. But that will not believed as the He is behind all these creations- then what? He does NOT have any MIND which He has given to all human beings as intelect , the power of discremination between good or evil for his children, etc. The history shoes that the religion of the conquer / ruler becomes the religion either by sword or gold but again in the name of an unknown ,unquestainale , unseen element called GOD or any name you call.
its pity that the followers of all organised great religions killed more number of people than those killed in recent Great Wars, again in the name of Religion.

I think you have an interesting point. The nation was founded because of Christianity and is out of that cultural context that our principles are based but we are not Christian Nation. Many of the founders did believe in the necessity of faith in peoples lives especially those that hold powerful positions and I am one to agree with them. I think its important to remember that God in the pledge and God in the motto is not anyone's particular God but a universal agreement that their is a higher power, much like you find in Alcohol Anonymous.

Actually, America was invaded by Europeans looking for land and wealth.
Some of them may have been running away from persecution of one sort or another, but the real reason people came to North and South America is because they saw a bunch of empty space (being blind to the fact that there were already millions of people here already) that they wanted.
Religion in no way had anything to do with.
Unless you count the Conquistadors who were really only interested in gold, but sucking up to the church wasn't a bad idea for a Spaniard looking to become a Noble. (Look at all these heathen souls I have saved by the sword, Padre!)

Right, casting a jaundiced eye upon the religious wars that had wracked Europe for centuries, our founders concluded Scottish Enlightenment principles were the best basis.
It was because of faith, but not in the way Fundie believers lie about it.

i think it would be more appropriate to say that it was founded because of capitalism. the revolt against england was driven by taxes, not religious differences. on a secondary level, it was founded because of free masonry. masons were the liberal movement of the 18th century. like muhammad said, colonization of the americas was driven by greed far more than by religion.

It was not founded *because* of faith. It was founded because of the desire to conquer new land and get profit.
