You need to ask permission from your best friend first. Respect his answer if he says no, and if he says yes, make sure he really means it and isn't just trying to be nice - you don't want him to resent you for it later.
Also, I think a month isn't that much time. Are you sure they are fully broken up, or is there any chance they will get back together? If there is any chance of this you shouldn't interfere.
I think the answer depends on what kind of friend it is. For a best friend or a really good friend, you want to be really careful about not hurting him and not risk ending the friendship. For a lesser friend or a friendly acquaintance, you can probably go for it once the breakup is announced (or certainly a month after the fact, or after the friend is dating others) without permission. You might also want to factor in how much you like this girl and if you think its worth the risk.

First if i were you i'd question how strong my feelings were for this girl. If you feel that you need to have her and you really think it will work out, then the only thing you can do is talk to your friend and see how he feels about it. Chances are the feelings wont be too strong towards her, they only dated for 4 months. Just make sure to talk to him about it, because friends are more important in the end.

You should ask your friend if he'd be ok with it. And it doesnt mean that your being a bad friend. I dont date my friends exes because they dont interest me and are imature, so yeah. But dating a friends ex does not make you a bad friend. If everyone went out of their way to not date someone they are interested in(who happened to be a friends ex) well, life would be pretty weird.

The world is too wide to play in your own backyard. There are millions of people out there. Why not give it a wide berth.
Your friend may be your friend forever but the relationship may not last as long. I'd rather keep a friend.

I would say No. However if you really like this girl and think you two could have a good relationship where you stay together for a long time--talk to your friend FIRST-- If he is okay with it then I don't see why not-- Just don't screw your friend over for a girl

Thats tuff. I dated my best friends ex and wound up marrying her. Imagine that. I would say no. Not that she isnt the best thing that ever happened to me but..caused alot of problems. people thought I really didnt have feelings for her but I did. Of course no one believed me until we got married. They said all I wanted was the drawers which was true to an extent but I proved them wrong for 15 years now.

Why not ? It's not like your stealing his girlfriend Talk to him before hand, so as not to ruin a friendship. Your friend might tell you things, about his ex, that might discourage you, or excite you. Besides, all good friends share.
If it feels right, go for it.

NEVER!!!! That's breaking an unspoken code that all decent friends have. Plus, think about it, you'd be "sloppy seconds" in a way, and she may just be going out with you for revenge. It's totally a BAD idea!

NO WAY!!! that is the fastest way to end a friendship over something that most likely wont last. Besides it would be akward to bring him to a social event and your friend is there
