The parent is supposed to receive the payments on behalf of the child(ren). Unfortunately many parents that get support never actually spend it as it is intended--on the child(ren).

Interesting question. In reality the custodial parent receives the child support to care for the child (food, clothes, health care, housing, etc).

I have seen some children expect the child support should come to them as an allowance of sorts as they get older. This is a problem because the custodial parent will then have the burden of all the costs associated with the child.

Hope this helps!

It goes to the parent to assist in caring for the child. For personal things like clothing and other wants as well as rent/housepayment, any bills, food, medical, daycare, etc.

Things could get quite messed up if the checks were handed over to the child. They would not likely use it in the right needs or in assisting the parent with the proper help in their care. The parents however are not suppose to blow it on themselves. It is jsut the same to help with the bill end of raising a child.

The parent is. As long as you remain underage your parent is the one to receive the child support payments. However, the money is to be used for you, and you ONLY! That means for taking care of you. To help with clothing, place to live, school things, etc. It does not mean that the money is suppose to be used to buy toys, or things that are not of any real use. It is to "support" you with. To have a home, meals, clothes on your body, etc. If your mother/father decides to buy you something you might want with it occasionally then that is fine also as long as the majority of the money is used for taking care of you. Hope I've helped.
* smilez*: Not many kids under the age of 18 are in control enough to buy just what they need with child support money. It's too easy to spend it on frivolous things. Not a good idea at all!
If child support is ordered through the courts then it is also ILLEGAL for the child to have control of the child support money.

The parent receives until the day the child turns 18 and then it goes directly to the child.

Does a 5 yr old really know how to go grocery shopping to buy food for themselves?Or pay the utilities so they will have heat?
Its for the parents so they take care of the child.

child support is considered to be the child's money. The parent is only allowed to cash and use for what the child needs. The parent can not use it to go gambling or for their own personal expenses. To make sure its used properly you can ask the other parent for reciepts of the expenses to make sure it is spent wisely. I think its the same with social security benefits too.

The parent, as it is to support the child...like buying them clothes, food, shoes, school supplies, and other necessities of life that the child does not buy themselves.
