Had a root canal on monday last wk. Got home pain was unbearable. Doc gave me antibiotics and pain meds. Next morning face, gum swollen and right side of face numb. Went to see doc next day, he said it has abscessed. More antibiotics and pain meds. Thursday still no better he consulted with oral surgeon, gave me Flagyl and medrol and ceflacor. Friday was feeling alright. Sat.and Sun. was the same as before. Still feel so much pressure and face still swollen and face still numb. Now I am achey all over, back of my head hurts, hurts in sinus area and in gum area. Dentist said the infection was in my jaw. I asked about him cutting the gum and letting it drain but he said it was to close to the nerve in my jaw and no one would do it. Could the infection still be in there after all these antibiotics? Could the infection be spreading? Need help as to what to do now.

Root canals can be very tricky. I would consider seeing an endodontist in your area. They are root canal specialist and deal with "problem" teeth. Look one up online or in your phone book.

In some people with chronic dental infection, there is large amount of fluid accumulating inside the bone next to the root tips of abscessed tooth. If the dentist performed a one day root canal treatment (complete a root canal treatment in one day) and the fluid didn't have a chance to completely drained out, the pressure from the fluid could cause pain after completing the root canal treatment. If you don't response to antibiotics, the fluid will continue to build inside causing pain. You might discuss with your dentist or an Endodontist who is specialized in root canal treatment. if your dentist is not an Endodontist. There are ways to correct this problem.

HELLO,

IT NORMALLY TAKES ANTIBIOTICS 2-3 DAYS FROM THE DAY YOU BEGIN TAKING THEM TO START T0 WORK.
I WOULD ADD WARM MOIST COMPRESSES AS WITH MICROWAVED WASHCLOTHS OVER THE SWOLLEN PARTS OF YOUR FACE.
WHAT DID THE ORAL SURGEON SAY ABOUT THE DRAINING INFECTION? COULD THE SWELLING BE CAUSED BY A MISSED SECOND MESIAL CANAL IN AN UPPER FIRST MOLAR?
