Good point. I find it odd that theists claim that without god people would behave abominably. To me, this sounds like they are being well-behaved, not because it the right thing to do, but because they fear god. This is not morality, but blindly obeying orders for fear of punishment.

I definately fear Gods wrath and having to stand before Him on the day of judgement. However, I also look forward to it and being able to dwell in the house of the Lord. I try to do good, because it pleases God and it is His commandment. The more I help others, the more that God always provides for me. It is a never ending circle and it fills my heart with happiness to be close to God and the more that I follow His will, the closer I find myself to His ever lasting grace.

I don't believe in god at all and I don't run around "sinning" my life away. I'm a responsible, productive adult. I go around and live my life in a respectable manner. If you passed me in public, you wouldn't know I was any different than you. The idea that the only good people are people who have the fear of god in the back of their mind is quite close-minded indeed.

The answer for all of us is that we behave because we fear discovery and punishment.

Take the average person and attach a polygraph (lie detector). Tell this person of a hypothetical situation in which he/she can take money from a bank and know for absolute certain that the bank will never even know it is missing. Would he/she take the money? Most likely this person will answer "no" but the polygraph will then indicate "deceptive". Only when this person finally answers "yes" will the polygraph indicate "not deceptive".

I think those with a heart of evil, only do good because of God's wrath.

I am good mostly because my actions affect others much more than I ever could imagine. So I rather be a positive influence in peoples lives rather than negative. Being in good with the Big Guy though has an importance too.

I do not believe in God, but my husband says I am one of the kindest people he has ever met. So, no, I am not good because of God's wrath.

I choose to obey God because I love him and am thankful for what he's done in my life. Not out of fear. As a christian I am not subject to his wrath.
