The prophet muhammad saaws did not celebrate his birthday.

Did he look down upon whomever else did?

I don't know.

but I can do without a birthday party.

Maybe just a simple "I am glad you were born and in my life would be fine." And um a kiss on the cheek.

Then again it would be nice to hear that everyday.

Asalam Alaykum,

well I am Sunni and I do believe it is haram to celebrate anything but our 2 Eid's. Its not only that I believe that but it is a fact! That is what Islam tells us! Now just bc something is one way does not mean we always do it. I do bake my husband a cake on his bday and we usually go out to dinner and thats all. He does the same for me. Now we have a baby and I sure we will do the same for him.

I agree with fasn321, I like the acknowledgment in a way...you see another year pass by and you reflect on your life. I don't have a party or anything, I don't actually CELEBRATE it.

I'm not Sunni nor Shia but I believe it's haraam to celebrate anything that isn't Islamic. So birthdays in reality have no purpose and they were started by pagans. We don't celebrate our death so why celebrate our birthday?

I believe it is haraam and an innovation in Islam. Also, the origins of birthdays and birthday cakes come from the pagans...
